The ICL International, formerly the Transvaal Open, was a golf tournament in South Africa as part of the Southern Africa Tour. Southern Africa Tour
The Sunshine Tour is a men's professional golf tour based in Southern and East Africa. For much of its early history it was known either as the Southern Africa Tour or Sunshine Circuit; through sponsorship deals, it has also been known as the FNB Tour and the Vodacom Tour. For the 2000–01 season the tour rebranded itself as the ''Sunshine Tour'' in an attempt to broaden its appeal. A large majority of the tour events are still staged in South Africa. The tour is one of the six leading men's tours which before 2009 made up the membership of the International Federation of PGA Tours, but it offers much less prize money than some of the leading tours, and leading Southern African golfers traditionally prefer to play on the PGA Tour or the European Tour if they can qualify to do so, typically returning to play in Sunshine Tour events a couple of times a year. Bruce Vaughan
Bruce Lloyd Vaughan (born September 10, 1956) is an American professional golfer. Early life Vaughan was born in Kankakee, Illinois. He didn't start playing golf until he was 20 while working as a firefighter in Hutchinson, Kansas. Professional career In 1990, Vaughan turned professional. Early in his career, he played on the Southern African Tour. He had much success during the 1993-94 season. Vaughn finished joint second at the ICL International with David Frost, only behind Nick Price. Later in the year he won the Autopage Mount Edgecombe Trophy. He finished second during the season's Order of Merit. Vaughn also played on the PGA Tour's developmental tour early in his career. The 1987–88 Southern Africa Tour was the 17th season of the Southern Africa Tour, the main professional golf tour in South Africa since it was formed in 1971. Season outline Local golfers from Zimbabwe and South African had success at the beginning of the season. At the first event, the Minolta Copiers Match Play, Zimbabwe's Tony Johnstone defeated countryman Mark McNulty 66 to 69 in the medal match play final to claim victory. Christopher Gary Williams (born 20 March 1959) is an English-born golfer who currently lives in South Africa. Williams has won seven times on the Sunshine Tour. Early life Williams was born in Liverpool, England. He moved to Johannesburg, South Africa in his late teens. Professional career In 1978, Williams turned professional, shortly after moving to South Africa. The 1988–89 Southern Africa Tour was the 18th season of the Southern Africa Tour, the main professional golf tour in South Africa since it was formed in 1971. Season outline With three wins and three runner-up finishes in the opening seven tournaments, the first half of the season belonged to Tony Johnstone. At the first event, the Minolta Copiers Match Play, he defeated Wayne Westner by two in the stroke play final. Johnstone also won the following week at the Bloemfontein Classic. He then finished runner-up at the next two events, the Safmarine South African Masters and the Goodyear Classic. The 1989–90 Southern Africa Tour was the 19th season of the Southern Africa Tour, the main professional golf tour in South Africa since it was formed in 1971. Season outline A variety of local golfers had success at the beginning of the season. South African Des Terblanche won the inaugural event, the Railfreight Bloemfontein Classic. It was his first victory on his home tour. The next tournament was the Minolta Copiers Match Play, a medal match play event, held at Sun City Golf Course. In the quarterfinals, Fulton Allem tied the course record with a 65 to defeat competitor Hugh Baiocchi. In the following two rounds Allem defeated " urnament favourite" David Frost and John Bland to win the event. Wayne Westner
Wayne Brett Westner (28 September 1961 4 January 2017) was a South African golfer. He was twice winner of the South African Open and also won twice on the European Tour. In partnership with Ernie Els, they won the 1996 World Cup of Golf, played at the Erinvale Golf Club near Cape Town. Els won the individual event with Westner second and the pair won the team event by 18 shots. Early life Westner was born in Johannesburg. Professional career In 1981, he turned professional. He won several events in his home country, including two South African Opens. Gavan Levenson
Gavan Neil Levenson (born 18 December 1953) is a South African professional golfer. Early life and amateur career Levenson was born in Johannesburg. He represented South Africa in the 1976 Eisenhower Trophy and won several major amateur tournaments including the French and Rhodesian Open Amateur Championships in 1978. Professional career In 1978, Levenson turned professional and joined the European Tour the following year. He won the Belgian Open and finishing in 29th place on the Order of Merit in his rookie season. After two seasons in Europe, Levenson qualified for the United States-based PGA Tour. Fulton Peter Allem (born 15 September 1957) is a South African professional golfer. Early life Allem was born in Kroonstad, Orange Free State, South Africa, the middle child of five children and the grandson of a Lebanese trader; he had a privileged upbringing. By the time he came into the world, his family had the largest corn farm in the Southern Hemisphere and the only privately owned grain silos in South Africa. Allem started playing golf at the age of 7 with encouragement from his father. Gary Player, a close family friend, also had a large influence on his early career. Professional career Allem did not attend college and turned pro in 1976. He spent the early part of his career playing mostly in South Africa. De Wet Basson
De Wet Basson is a South African retired professional golfer. He won the 1991 Fancourt Hall of Fame tournament on the Sunshine Tour and represented South Africa at the 1992 World Cup. He played on the European Tour in 1993 and 1994 and was runner-up in the 1993 Turespaña Iberia Open de Canarias. Professional career Basson played on the South African tour from late 1989. In December 1991 he won the Fancourt Hall of Fame tournament, two strokes ahead of Anders Forsbrand. Kevin James Johnson (born April 25, 1967) is an American professional golfer. Early life Johnson was born in Plymouth, Massachusetts. He credits his father, Ken, as his hero for helping him succeed in golf. Johnson grew up in Pembroke, Massachusetts.
