Hystrix (plant)
''Hystrix'' was a formerly recognized genus of grass (family Poaceae). The genus ''Hystrix'' was created in 1794 by Conrad Moench for the species described as ''Elymus hystrix'' by Carl Linnaeus in 1753. Moench considered that ''E. hystrix'' was sufficiently distinct to be placed in a separate genus as ''Hystrix patula''; the genus was to be used for species without glumes or with long setaceous glumes. Subsequently a number of other grass species were placed in this genus. Genomic studies from the 1960s onwards showed that ''H. patula'' does in fact belong in ''Elymus'', as this is now defined. Other species placed in ''Hystrix'' have genomes more closely resembling those of '' Leymus'' species, and are better placed in that genus. Poaceae
Poaceae () or Gramineae () is a large and nearly ubiquitous family of monocotyledonous flowering plants commonly known as grasses. It includes the cereal grasses, bamboos and the grasses of natural grassland and species cultivated in lawns and pasture. The latter are commonly referred to collectively as grass. With around 780 genera and around 12,000 species, the Poaceae is the fifth-largest plant family, following the Asteraceae, Orchidaceae, Fabaceae and Rubiaceae. The Poaceae are the most economically important plant family, providing staple foods from domesticated cereal crops such as maize, wheat, rice, barley, and millet as well as forage, feed for meat-producing animals. Conrad Moench
Conrad Moench (sometimes written Konrad Mönch; 15 August 1744 – 6 January 1805) was a German botanist, professor of botany at Marburg University from 1786 until his death. He wrote 'Methodus Plantas horti botanici et agri Marburgensis' in 1794, an arranged account of plants in the fields and gardens of Marburg. In 1802 he named the plant ''Gillenia trifoliata'' in a supplement to a local flora of the city of Marburg. He also named the plant genus '' Echinacea'' (1794). Elymus Hystrix
''Elymus hystrix'', known as eastern bottlebrush grass, or bottle-brush-grass, is a bunchgrass in the grass family, Poaceae. It is native to the Eastern United States and Eastern Canada. Description ''Elymus hystrix'' is a herbaceous plant with alternate, simple leaves, on erect stems. The flowers are white and bloom in spring. ''Elymus hystrix'' ranges from approximately two and a half to four and a half feet in height. There are usually two spikelets at each of the five to nine nodes of the plant. Unlike some similar native grasses, the blades of ''Elymus hystrix'' do not have glumes surrounding its spikelets. Carl Linnaeus
Carl Linnaeus (; 23 May 1707 – 10 January 1778), also known after his ennoblement in 1761 as Carl von Linné Blunt (2004), p. 171. (), was a Swedish botanist, zoologist, taxonomist, and physician who formalised binomial nomenclature, the modern system of naming organisms. He is known as the "father of modern taxonomy". Genome
In the fields of molecular biology and genetics, a genome is all the genetic information of an organism. It consists of nucleotide sequences of DNA (or RNA in RNA viruses). The nuclear genome includes protein-coding genes and non-coding genes, other functional regions of the genome such as regulatory sequences (see non-coding DNA), and often a substantial fraction of 'junk' DNA with no evident function.
