Hylobius Abietis
''Hylobius abietis'' or the large pine weevil is a beetle belonging to family Curculionidae. This species is widely regarded as the most important pest of most commercially important coniferous trees in European plantations. Seedlings planted or arising from natural regeneration (germinated seed-fall) after clear felling operations are especially at risk. The adult weevils cause damage by eating the bark of seedlings around the 'collar' of the stem, thus 'ring-barking' the tree seedling which usually results in its demise. Description The adult weevils are approximately in length (without beak/snout) and are dark brown with patches of yellow or light brown hairs arranged in irregular rows on their elytra. The legs are black or deep red with a distinctive tooth on the femora and at the end of tibiae. The full grown larvae are , typical for weevils, apodial, curved and are whitish, with brown head. Forest Pathology
Forest pathology is the research of both biotic and abiotic maladies affecting the health of a forest ecosystem, primarily fungal pathogens and their insect vectors. It is a subfield of forestry and plant pathology. Forest pathology is part of the broader approach of forest protection. Insects, diseases and severe weather events damaged about 40 million ha of forests in 2015, mainly in the temperate and boreal domains. Abiotic factors There are a number of abiotic factors which affect the health of a forest, such as moisture issues like drought, winter-drying, waterlogging resulting from over-abundance or lack of precipitation such as hail, snow, rain. Wind is also an important abiotic factor as windthrow (the uprooting or breaking of trees due to high winds) causes an obvious and direct loss of stability to a forest or its trees. Often, abiotic factors and biotic factors will affect a forest at the same time. For example, if wind speed is 80 km per hour then many t ... Hylobius Warreni
''Hylobius warreni'', Warren's rootcollar weevil, is a common pest of spruce and pine throughout Canada. It causes considerable damage to native species of spruce both in natural stands and in plantations (Rose and Lindquist 1985).Rose, A.H.; Lindquist, O.H. 1985. Insects of eastern spruces, fir and, hemlock, revised edition. Gov’t Can., Can. For. Serv., Ottawa, For. Tech. Rep. 23. 159 p. (cited in Coates et al. 1994, cited orig ed 1977) Description ''Hylobius warreni'' is long, and has a dull black body colour. It is clothed with fine grey scales between the patches of white. Trees growing in wet ground or in deep layers of humus are most susceptible to attack. Characteristically, tunnels in the root collar region are filled with pitch, with larvae feeding on the cambial or inner bark region. Small trees are often girdled and killed. Feeding damage on larger trees permits wood rots to enter into the wounds, the trees becoming susceptible to wind breakage. References ... Hylobius Transversovittatus
''Hylobius transversovittatus'' is a species of weevil in the family Curculionidae. It is native to the Old World where both adults and larvae feed on purple loosestrife (''Lythrum salicaria''). This plant is regarded as an invasive species in North America and the weevil has been introduced into both the United States and Canada in an effort to control the plant. Description The adult ''Hylobius transversovittatus'' is a dark brown colour with two irregular transverse lines of tufts of white hair. It is about thirteen millimetres long and six millimetres wide and has a narrow head and thorax and a curved trunk-like proboscis. The antennae are elbowed and the legs reddish. The eggs are white or pale yellow and oval in shape and hatch within about two weeks. The larvae are a creamy colour with dark brown heads and adopt a crescent shape. Biology Adult ''Hylobius transversovittatus'' beetles emerge in the spring from the soil or leaf litter where they have been overwintering. They ... Leonard Gyllenhaal
Leonard Gyllenhaal (3 December 1752 – 13 May 1840) was a Swedish military officer and entomologist. Born on the Ribbingsberg manor in Västergötland in west Sweden, Leonard Gyllenhaal was son of an army officer and belonged to a family of the lower nobility. He went to school (Skara trivialskola) in the cathedral town of Skara together with, among others, the future poet Johan Henrik Kellgren, and later renowned naturalists Anders Dahl and the brothers Adam and Johan Afzelius, with whom he went on natural excursions. Like some of his friends, he went to Uppsala to study under Linnaeus in 1769. He never matriculated and remained in Uppsala only one semester, before switching to a military career in accordance with the wishes and traditions of the family, enrolling in the '' Adelsfanan'' ( "Banner of Nobles") cavalry regiment, and a few years later transferring to the drabantkåren (Garde du Corps). Gyllenhaal, however, remained in contact with Linnaeus through an extensiv ... [...More Info...]       [...Related Items...]     OR:     [Wikipedia]   [Google]   [Baidu]   |

Johann Friedrich Wilhelm Herbst
Johann Friedrich Wilhelm Herbst (1 November 1743 – 5 November 1807) was a German naturalist and entomologist from Petershagen, Minden-Ravensberg. He served as a chaplain in the Prussian army. His marriage in Berlin, 1770, with Euphrosyne Luise Sophie (1742–1805), daughter of the Prussian ''Hofrat'' Libert Waldschmidt seems to have been childless. He was the joint editor, with Carl Gustav Jablonsky, of ''Naturgeschichte der in- und ausländischen Insekten'' (1785–1806, 10 volumes), which was one of the first attempts at a complete survey of the order . Herbst's ''Naturgeschich ... [...More Info...]       [...Related Items...]     OR:     [Wikipedia]   [Google]   [Baidu]   |
