Huntley Township
Huntley is a former incorporated and now geographic township in Carleton County in eastern Ontario, Canada. Huntley was located in the western part of the county, bordered to the northwest by Fitzroy Township, to the northeast by March Township, to the southwest by Ramsay Township and to the southeast by Goulbourn Township. It includes the communities of Carp, Corkery, Huntley, Manion Corners, and Westwood. According to the Canada 2021 Census, the Township had a population of 10,922. History The township was surveyed in 1818 and the first settlers arrived shortly thereafter. The township was incorporated in 1850. The first settlers in the area were immigrants from Ireland in the early 19th century. Huntley took its name from Huntly Castle, associated with Charlotte Lennox, Duchess of Richmond, whose husband Charles served as Governor General of British North America from 1818 to 1819. Charlotte Lennox, Duchess of Richmond and Lennox (born Lady Charlotte Gordon; 20 September 1768 – 5 May 1842) cites was a Scottish aristocrat and peeress best known as the hostess of the famed ball held in Brussels on the eve of the Battle of Quatre Bras. Biography Born at Gordon Castle, Lady Charlotte Gordon was the eldest child of Alexander Gordon, 4th Duke of Gordon, and his wife, Jane Maxwell. On 9 September 1789, she married Charles Lennox, 4th Duke of Richmond, 4th Duke of Lennox and 4th Duke of Aubigny. In 1814, the family moved to Brussels, where the Duchess gave the ball at which the Duke of Wellington received confirmation that the Army of the North under the command of Napoleon Bonaparte had entered the territory of the United Kingdom of the Netherlands near Charleroi (in what is now the Kingdom of Belgium). George Nelson Kidd
George Nelson Kidd (October 1, 1864 – February 9, 1907) was an Ontario farmer and political figure. He represented Carleton in the Legislative Assembly of Ontario from 1894 to 1907 as a Conservative-Patrons of Industry, then Independent Conservative and finally as a Conservative member. He was born in Carp, Canada West, the son of Richard Kidd, an Irish immigrant, and educated at Carp and in Kingston. Kidd served as reeve of Huntley Township from 1889 to 1894. He was also president for the Huntley Agricultural Fair. Kidd married Esther Alvira Young. His cousin Edward Kidd represented Carleton in the House of Commons of Canada during the same time period. John Holmes (Canadian MP)
John Holmes (1828 – 22 September 1879)https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/208686938/john-holmes was a Canadian politician and surveyor. He was born in Newtownforbes, County Longford, Ireland in 1828, the son of Alexander Holmes, and was educated in Ireland. He came to Upper Canada in 1846 and settled in Huntley Township where he became a provincial land surveyor. He married Eliza Graham. Holmes served seven years as reeve for the township and was also warden for Carleton County for five years. He served as captain in the local militia from 1866 to 1875. Elected in the Canadian federal election of 1867, he served as the Liberal-Conservative Member of Parliament representing the riding of Carleton in the province of Ontario. West Carleton was a township municipality in Eastern Ontario, Canada. It was located in the rural parts of what is now the City of Ottawa, west of Kanata. Its northern boundary was the Ottawa River. Torbolton Township, Ontario
Torbolton is a geographic township and former municipality that was originally part of Carleton County in eastern Ontario, Canada. Torbolton is located in the north-western part of the county, bordered to the southwest by Fitzroy Township, to the southeast by March Township and to the north by the Ottawa River. It includes the communities of Baskin's Beach, Buckham's Bay, Constance Bay, Dirleton, Kilmaurs, MacLarens, and Woodlawn. The township was established in 1821. Although white pine was harvested from the forests of this area from the beginning of the 19th century, the first permanent settler is believed to have been David MacLaren in the 1820s. In 1974, the township was amalgamated with Huntley and Fitzroy to form West Carleton. In 2001, West Carleton became part of the new city of Ottawa. General Charles Lennox, 4th Duke of Richmond, 4th Duke of Lennox, 4th Duke of Aubigny, (9 December 176428 August 1819) was a British peer, soldier, politician and Governor-General of British North America. Background Richmond was born to General Lord George Lennox, the younger son of Charles Lennox, 2nd Duke of Richmond, and Lady Louisa, daughter of William Kerr, 4th Marquess of Lothian. His aunts included the famous four Lennox sisters. Cricket Richmond was a keen cricketer. He was an accomplished right-hand bat and a noted wicket-keeper. An amateur, he was a founder member of the Marylebone Cricket Club.
