Hunter Medina
The Hunter Medina 20 was designed by David Thomas for British Hunter boats in 1979 as a fast lifting keel trailer-sailer, based on the designs of the highly successful Hunter Sonata. It had a single cabin with four berths and a galley. It proved itself to be a practical and well built small cruiser-racer, with a light 860 kg displacement, fast hull. Her draft is 3' 6" with the keel down and 10" with the keel raised. The keel is made of cast iron and lifts straight up and down on a winch. It weighs 220 kilos. The type has ceased production, but the high build quality and demand has ensured that most are still afloat, so the Medina is still an active class. A total of 165 Medinas were produced. British Hunter
Hunter Boats Limited is a British boat builder presently based in Southampton. The company specializes in the design and manufacture of glassfibre sailboats. The company was founded by in 1969 by Michael Polard, as the Essex Boat Company. In 2009 it became a brand of Lauren Marine of Southampton under the name British Hunter. History The first design produced by the new company was the Squib, an open keelboat designed by Oliver Lee in 1967. Lee also designed a cabin version of the Squib in 1972, the Hunter 19, later called the Europa. Lee was the principle naval architect for the company in this period, designing the Hunter 490 and the Hunter 701. In the early 1970s the company relocated to Rochford and a custom-built plant in that town. At that time it was renamed Hunter Boats Limited and by 1975 David Thomas became the main designer. Broach (sailing)
A broach is an abrupt, involuntary change in a vessel's course, towards the wind, resulting from loss of directional control, when the vessel's rudder becomes ineffective. This can be caused by ''wind'' or ''wave'' action. A wind gust can heel (lean) a sailing vessel, lifting its rudder out of the water. Both power and sailing vessels can broach when wave action reduces the effectiveness of the rudder. This risk occurs when traveling in the same general direction as the waves are moving. The loss of control from either cause usually leaves the vessel beam-on to the sea, and in more severe cases the rolling moment may cause a capsize. An alternative meaning in the context of submarine operation is an unintended surfacing of a shallow-running submarine in a deep wave trough.
