Hundertwasser Toilets
The Hundertwasser Toilets is a public toilet located at 60 Gillies Street, the main street of the town of Kawakawa, New Zealand, Kawakawa in northern New Zealand. The structure was completed in 1999 and named after the architect and visual artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser, who conceived and designed the project. It is one of the few toilet blocks worldwide seen both as an international work of art and a tourist attraction in its own right. Description The toilet facility was designed by the reclusive Austrian and New Zealand artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser, who lived near Kawakawa, New Zealand, Kawakawa from 1975 until his death in 2000, aged 71. Friedrich Stowasser (15 December 1928 – 19 February 2000), better known by his pseudonym Friedensreich Regentag Dunkelbunt Hundertwasser (), was an Austrian visual artist and architect who also worked in the field of environmental protection. He emigrated to the Far North District, Far North of New Zealand in the 1970s, where he lived and worked for most of the rest of his life. Hundertwasser stood out as an opponent of "a straight line" and any standardisation, expressing this concept in the field of building design. His best known work is the Hundertwasserhaus in Vienna, which has become a notable place of interest in the Austrian capital, characterised by imaginative vitality and uniqueness. Noma Shepherd
Noma Jeanne Shepherd (; 12 August 1935 – 19 November 2023) was a New Zealand community leader. Based in Kawakawa in the Bay of Islands area, Shepherd's contributions to the community over many years included supporting the creation of the Hundertwasser Toilets and being instrumental in the establishment of Te Hononga Hundertwasser Memorial Park, which opened in 2020. Life and career Shepherd was born Noma Jeanne Tidswell on 12 August 1935, the daughter of Phyllis Jeanne and Raymond Clarence Tidswell. Shepherd and her husband Doug were the farm managers for Friedensreich Hundertwasser at Kaurinui. In 1999 she worked with Hundertwasser and local volunteers to build the Hundertwasser Toilets, which became a tourist attraction in Kawakawa. She read a speech on Hundertwasser's behalf at the opening of the toilets, and re-read it at the 20-year anniversary celebration in 2019.
