Humphrey Luya
Humphrey Fleetwood Luya (3 February 1918 – 9 May 2008) was an English international rugby union player. Luya was born in West Derby, Liverpool, and educated at Merchant Taylors' Boys' School. After joining the Royal Artillery in 1939, Luya served in North Africa during the early stages of World War II. He was captured in 1941 while fighting in Crete and held at the Stalag XVIII-A prisoner of war camp outside Wolfsburg, Austria, before being transferred to Oflag IX-A/H in central Germany. With Russian troops advancing in 1945, Luya and his fellow prisoners were marched out of camp by the Germans and he made a successful escape by bolting into the woods, along with Lieutenant Colonel George Kennard. They were discovered two-days later by American soldiers, who needed to be talked out of shooting the two blond-haired Britons, having initially believed they were Germans in disguise. West Derby
West Derby ( ) is an area of Liverpool, Merseyside, England, in the east of the city. At the 2011 Census, the population was 14,382. History West Derby Mentioned in the ''Domesday Book'', West Derby achieved significance far earlier than Liverpool itself. The name West Derby comes from an Old Norse word meaning "place of the wild beasts" or "wild deer park" and refers to the deer park (now Croxteth Park) established there by King Edward the Confessor. West Derby became the main administrative area in today's Liverpool for the Norman Conquest and was the largest area within the West Derby Hundred which covered most of south west Lancashire. Contrary to popular belief, the original Earls of Derby were not conferred their title from West Derby, but from the county of Derbyshire, Robert de Ferrers being the first Earl. Leeds Tykes
Leeds Tykes (formerly Leeds RUFC, Leeds Carnegie and Yorkshire Carnegie) is an English rugby union club in Leeds, West Yorkshire, England, playing in the National League 2 North. The club was founded as Headingley FC, but renamed in 1991 when it joined with Roundhay RUFC to form Leeds RUFC. In 1998, the club merged with Leeds Rhinos to form Leeds Rugby Limited, also known as Leeds Tykes. In 2007, Leeds Metropolitan University bought a 51% stake in the club and changed the name to fit with the university's sport department, Carnegie College. At the end of the 2008–09 season, ownership of the club passed back into the hands of Leeds Rugby. They are now called Leeds Tykes. Leeds have bounced between the Premiership and the second-level National Division One, now known as the RFU Championship; they were either promotion and relegation, promoted or relegated in four consecutive seasons starting in 2006. Leeds is a city in West Yorkshire, England.
