Hugh MacRae
Hugh MacRae (30 March 1865 – 1951) was an American businessman who served as a co-conspirator in the Wilmington insurrection of 1898. Early life MacRae was born in 1865 to a Scottish and English family in Carbonton, North Carolina; his grandfather was General Alexander MacRae, his father Donald MacRae, and his mother Julia Norton MacRae. His grandfather and father were businessmen: Alexander had established a railroad and held offices at the city and county levels, while Donald served as a consular official for the British government in Wilmington and invested in various companies. MacRae graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1885, thereafter moving to western North Carolina to be a mining engineer. Carbonton, North Carolina
Carbonton is an Unincorporated area, unincorporated community in southwestern Chatham County, North Carolina, Chatham County, North Carolina, United States, along the Deep River (North Carolina), Deep River. The community lies near the point where Chatham, Lee County, North Carolina, Lee, and Moore County, North Carolina, Moore counties intersect one another. The community derived its name from the local coal industry that thrived nearby until the early 20th century. A dam was erected on the Deep River in Carbonton in the early 1800s. In the 1920s, the Carolina Power & Light Company established a hydroelectric plant at the dam, making it the first power plant in the Sandhills (Carolina), Sandhills region. In 2005, the dam was removed to improve the river ecosystem, but the powerhouse was unaltered. Linville is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) in Avery County, North Carolina, United States. It was first listed as a CDP in the 2020 census with a population of 283. Alfred Moore Waddell
Alfred Moore Waddell (September 16, 1834 – March 17, 1912) was an American politician and white supremacist. A member of the Democratic Party, he served as a U.S. representative from North Carolina between 1871 and 1879 and as mayor of Wilmington, North Carolina from 1898 to 1906. Waddell was a leader of the Wilmington insurrection of 1898, in which a violent, coordinated mob of about 2,000 white men massacred up to 300 African-Americans, destroyed the property and businesses of African-Americans, and overthrew the elected Fusion government of the city of Wilmington, North Carolina; and Waddell became mayor of Wilmington after holding his predecessor at gunpoint and forcing him to resign.
