Howkins Inlet
Piggott Peninsula () is a broad snow-covered peninsula between New Bedford Inlet and Wright Inlet on Lassiter Coast, Palmer Land, Antarctica. It is bounded to the west by Bryan Glacier and Swann Glacier. Location Piggott Peninsula is on the Lassiter Coast of southern Palmer Land, facing the Weddell Sea to the east. It is between Wright Inlet to the south and New Bedford Inlet to the north. Bryan Glacier runs north along its west side to enter New Bedford Inlet. Arctowski Peak is at the head of Howkins Inlet. Capes, from north to south, include Cape Brooks, Lamb Point and Cape Wheeler. Discovery and name Piggott Peninsula was first seen from the air and photographed by the United States Antarctic Service (USAS) on December 30, 1940. Palmer Land
Palmer Land () is the portion of the Antarctic Peninsula, Antarctica that lies south of a line joining Cape Jeremy and Cape Agassiz. This application of Palmer Land is consistent with the 1964 agreement between the Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names and the UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee, in which the name Antarctic Peninsula was approved for the major peninsula of Antarctica, and the names Graham Land and Palmer Land for the northern and southern portions, respectively. The line dividing them is roughly 69° S. Boundaries In its southern extreme, the Antarctic Peninsula stretches west, with Palmer Land eventually bordering Ellsworth Land along the 80° W line of longitude. New Bedford Inlet () is a large pouch-shaped, ice-filled embayment between Cape Kidson and Cape Brooks, along the east coast of Palmer Land, Antarctica. Location New Bedford Inlet is on the Lassiter Coast of southern Palmer Land, opening onto the Weddell Sea to the east. It is north of Piggott Peninsula and Howkins Inlet and south of Mossman Inlet. The Warner Mountains are to the southwest and the Dana Mountains to the northwest. Several glaciers drain into the inlet. Clockwise from the south they include Wells Glacier, Bryan Glacier, Douglas Glacier, Meinardus Glacier with its left tributary Haines Glacier, and Mosby Glacier with its left tributary Fenton Glacier. Lassiter Coast
The Lassiter Coast is the portion of the east coast of the Antarctic Peninsula that extends from Cape Mackintosh to Cape Adams. The northern portion of this coast was discovered and photographed from the air by the United States Antarctic Service in 1940. During 1947 the entire extent of the coast was photographed from the air by the Ronne Antarctic Research Expedition (RARE) under Finn Ronne, who in conjunction with the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey charted it from the ground. The name was applied by the Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names for Captain James W. Lassiter of the then United States Army Air Forces, who as chief pilot was instrumental in the overall success of the RARE aerial exploratory program. Weddell Sea
The Weddell Sea is part of the Southern Ocean and contains the Weddell Gyre. Its land boundaries are defined by the bay formed from the coasts of Coats Land and the Antarctic Peninsula. The easternmost point is Cape Norvegia at Princess Martha Coast, Queen Maud Land. To the east of Cape Norvegia is the King Haakon VII Sea. Much of the southern part of the sea is covered by a permanent, massive ice shelf field, the Filchner-Ronne Ice Shelf. The sea is contained within the two overlapping Antarctic territorial claims of Argentine Antarctica, the British Antarctic Territory, and also resides partially within the Antártica Chilena Province, Antarctic Chilean Territory.
