Howell's School, Llandaff
Howell's School () is a private day school for girls in Llandaff, a district in northern Cardiff, Wales. It consists of a nursery, infants, junior, senior school and a sixth form. The sixth form became coeducational in September 2005 and was renamed Howell's Co-ed College. History In 1537, Thomas Howell, a Welsh merchant trading in Bristol, London and Seville, bequeathed 12,000 gold ducats to the Drapers' Company to provide dowries "every yere for Maydens for ever." His "Merchant's Mark" is still used as a logo for the school. The school's magazine is called the ''Golden Ducat'' in reference to the bequest. After founding a girls' school of the same name in the town of Denbigh, the Company started building the Llandaff school in 1859 and opened to girls the following year. In 1899 it was expanded to accommodate boarders but the boarding programme has been discontinued. The school still retains its links as the Company has a representative in the school board. Howells is a village in Colfax County, Nebraska, United States. The population was 561 at the 2010 census. History Howells was platted in 1886 when the Fremont, Elkhorn and Missouri Valley Railroad was extended to that point. It was named for James Smith Howell, a local resident. The Howells post office, established in 1886, was spelled as Howell (without the S) until 1937. Geography According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of , all land. Howells is in northern Colfax County in east-central Nebraska, three miles east of the junction of highways 15 and 91. Howells lies southeast of Norfolk, northeast of Columbus, northwest of Fremont, northwest of Omaha and north of Lincoln. Howells, New York
Wallkill is a town in Orange County, New York, United States. The population was 30,486 at the 2020 census. It is centrally located in the county. Interstate 84 crosses New York State Route 17 in the southern part of the town. U.S. Route 6 and New York State routes 17K, 211 and 302 also cross portions of the town. History The original land patent for the town was dated 1724, but little was done for decades to develop and settle the region. The town was established in 1772, but part of the town was lost upon the formation of Ulster County. Wallkill's claim to fame during the American Revolution was the production of gunpowder in factories in Phillipsburgh and Craigville for American troops by Henry Wisner and his son-in-law Moses Phillips. Howells (department Store)
Howells was a large department store located on St Mary Street in Cardiff, Wales, established by James Howell in 1865. It was acquired by the House of Fraser group in 1972 and re-branded as House of Fraser in 2010. In January 2022, the Grade II* listed building was acquired by the Thackeray Group, which announced plans to convert it into an aparthotel. The store closed on 26 March 2023. History James Howell was the son of a Pembrokeshire farmer. On 21 October 1865, he opened a shop in The Hayes, Cardiff, in a building called Stuart Hall. In August 1867, the drapery shop moved to St Mary Street. By 1892, he had a shop which extended from Trinity Street in the east, to St Mary Street in the west. The first part of the current store was built in the late 19th century and includes an ornate facade on St Mary Street. Howells & Stokes was an American architectural firm founded in 1897 by John Mead Howells and Isaac Newton Phelps Stokes. The firm dissolved in 1917. Howells & Stokes designed, among other structures, St. Paul's Chapel at Columbia University; Woodbridge Hall, part of the Hewitt Quadrangle on the campus of Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut; the Engineering Quadrangle at Pratt Institute; Horace Mann Hall, in collaboration with Edgar A. Josselyn at Teachers College, Columbia University; and office buildings in New York City, Seattle, San Francisco, and Providence, Rhode Island. The firm was hired to plan the redevelopment of the original downtown Seattle site of the University of Washington.
