Howel Harris
Howell Harris ( cy, Howel Harris, italic=no; 23 January 1714 – 21 July 1773) was a Calvinistic Methodist evangelist. He was one of the main leaders of the Welsh Methodist revival in the 18th century, along with Daniel Rowland and William Williams Pantycelyn. Life Harris was born at Trefeca, near Talgarth in Brecknockshire on 23 January 1714. He was the youngest of five children of Howel ap Howel, alias Harris (c. 1672–1731), a carpenter, and his wife, Susannah (died 1751), daughter of Thomas Powell. The family originally hailed from Carmarthenshire, but had settled in Trefeca in 1700, where Howell Sr had purchased a small landholding. Harris's oldest brother Joseph trained as a blacksmith, but went on to secure a post at the Royal Mint after studying in London. His other brother Thomas made his name as a tailor to wealthy clients and amassed enough income to purchase estates in Tregunter and Trefeca, and other properties nearby. Talgarth
Talgarth is a market town, community and electoral ward in southern Powys, Mid Wales, about north of Crickhowell, north-east of Brecon and south-east of Builth Wells. Notable buildings in the town include the 14th-century parish church and a defensive tower house. According to traditional accounts, Talgarth was the capital of the early medieval Welsh Kingdom of Brycheiniog. It is in the historic county of Brecknockshire. In 2011, it had a population of 1,724. This is a list of High Sheriffs of Brecknockshire or Breconshire. The office of High Sheriff of Brecknockshire was established in 1535 since when a High Sheriff was appointed annually by the Queen until 1974 when the office was merged into that of High Sheriff of Powys as part of the creation of Powys from the amalgamation of Montgomeryshire, Radnorshire and Brecknockshire. Presbyterian Church Of Wales
The Presbyterian Church of Wales ( cy, Eglwys Bresbyteraidd Cymru), also known as Calvinistic Methodist Church (), is a denomination of Protestant Christianity in Wales. History The church was born out of the Welsh Methodist revival and the preaching of Howell Harris and Daniel Rowland in the 18th century and seceded from the Church of England in 1811. In 1823, a Confession of Faith was created and adopted, based on the standard Westminster Confession. Rhydyclafdy
Rhydyclafdy (or Rhyd-y-clafdy) is a small village close to the southern coast of the Llŷn Peninsula in the Welsh county of Gwynedd. It lies 2.8 miles (4.58 km) to the west of Pwllheli and 19.65 miles (31.62 km) south west of Caernarfon. The village forms part of the community of Buan along with Boduan, and together they have a population of 469. Education Primary education was provided by Ysgol Rhydyclafdy, located in the village. The school is in the Ysgol Glan y Môr catchment area, where the majority of students will go on to complete their secondary education. However the school closed down in 2008 and village children have to travel to Llanbedrog or Pentre Uchaf. This has had a marked effect on the village community as the school was always the centre of the village. Sidney Griffith
Sidney Griffith (née Wynne; died 1752), known in her time as "Madam" Griffith, was an important figure in the Welsh Methodist revival of the mid-18th century. She was the daughter of Cadwaladr Wynne of Voelas, Denbighshire, and was named Sidney after her grandmother, a member of the prominent Thelwall family. Her mother Jane was the daughter of Edward Griffith of Garn. In about 1741, Sidney married William Griffith of Cefn Amwlch, who ill-treated her. Their son was born in 1742. In 1746, Sidney Griffith heard a sermon by a Methodist preacher, Peter Williams, and began to follow Methodist teachings. Marmaduke Gwynne
Marmaduke Gwynne (1691–1769) was a descendant of the Gwynne family of Glanbrân near Llandovery and an early and influential Methodist convert. He married well and employed Theophilus Evans as an Anglican private chaplain. He was converted to Methodism by Howell Harris. He served as a legal adviser and financial supporter to the Methodists and his daughter Sarah married Charles Wesley.
