Howard Bland
Howard Bland Sr. (May 5, 1848 – March 9, 1933) was an American businessman and politician. Biography Bland was born on May 5, 1848, in Zanesville, Ohio. He moved to Taylor, Texas in 1878 to work as a businessman. He also founded the ''Taylor Press The ''Taylor Press'' is a community newspaper published in Taylor, Texas, serving East Williamson County as the legal newspaper for several communities. It has an online edition, a website and a Facebook page. The ''Taylor Press'' calls itself "t ...''. In 1880, he returned to Zanesville to marry Augusta Schultz. Bland served as a Democratic member of the 34th Texas Legislature from the 91st District. He served from January 12, 1915, to January 9, 1917. In 1919, he was selected by William P. Hobby to represent Texas at the World's Cotton Fair. Bland died on March 9, 1933. Bland was also a settler of Zella, Texas, which was named for his daughter Zella. Taylor, Texas
Taylor is a city in Williamson County, Texas, United States. The population at the 2020 United States census, 2020 Census was 16,267, up from 15,191 as of 2010. History In 1876, the Texas Land Company auctioned lots in anticipation of the arrival of the International-Great Northern Railroad when Taylor was founded that year. The city was named after Edward Moses Taylor, a railroad official, under the name Taylorsville, which officially became Taylor in 1892. Immigrants from Moravia and Bohemia (now the Czech Republic) and other Slavic states, as well as from Germany and Austria, helped establish the town. It soon became a busy shipping point for cattle, grain, and cotton. By 1878, the town had 1,000 residents and 32 businesses, 29 of which were destroyed by fire in 1879. Zella, Texas
Zella is a ghost town in McMullen County, Texas, United States. History Zella is situated on Texas State Highway 97. It was named for Zella Bland, daughter of settler Howard Bland. It was settled in 1913 on the route of the San Antonio, Uvalde and Gulf Railroad. The Zella Townsite Company constructed a hotel, a rail depot, and a well, circulating brochures to attract settlers. A post office was founded in 1914, but closed in 1916, by which point the town had been mostly abandoned due to drought and the lack of promised irrigation facilities.
