Houston Hurricane
The Houston Hurricane was a soccer team based out of Houston that played in the NASL. They played from 1978 to 1980. Their home field was the Astrodome. Their colors were orange, white and red. History The team was the last of six expansion teams granted for the 1978 season and had about three months to sign players and sell tickets. Though the coach, Timo Liekoski, who had been an assistant with the Dallas Tornado, was capable, assembling a competitive team in so short a time would be daunting. In any case, the Hurricane placed last in its first season with ten wins of thirty matches (there were no draws in the NASL) and drew a miserable average attendance of 5,806, with only the Chicago Sting and San Diego Sockers drawing less in the 24-team league. Kai Haaskivi
Kai Haaskivi (born 28 December 1955) is a retired Finnish soccer player. He starred in the North American Soccer League, playing outdoor as well as indoor soccer. He also played for the Finland national football team. He now coaches in the United States. Playing career Professional The 178 cm midfielder began his NASL career in the summer of 1978 with the Dallas Tornado. Haaskivi played in 1979–80 with the Houston Hurricane and 1981–82 with the Edmonton Drillers. He led the league in assists in 1981 with 21 and helped the Drillers win the 1980–81 NASL indoor championship and was named the MVP of the finals. He finished his NASL career with 112 points in 135 games. Haaskivi began his MISL career in the league's inaugural season of 1978–79 with the Houston Summit. Dale Russell (born 19 January 1955) is a U.S. retired soccer forward who played in the North American Soccer League and the Major Indoor Soccer League. He also earned one cap with the U.S. national team. College While born in Bermuda, Russell attended Philadelphia Textile where he played on the men's soccer team from 1973 to 1976. He was a four-time All American, second team as a freshman and first team each of his next three seasons. He is the school's career leader in points (198), goals (71) and is second in career assists with 55. The 1978 NASL Skelly Invitational was a four-team indoor soccer tournament held in Tulsa, Oklahoma, at the Tulsa Assembly Center on the first weekend of March 1979. Overview Four teams, all from the North American Soccer League, participated in the two-day event: the Houston Hurricane, the Minnesota Kicks, the Washington Diplomats, and the host Tulsa Roughnecks. Matches were 60 minutes long and divided into three 20-minute periods, with an intermission between each period. Paul Hammond (footballer)
Paul Hammond is an English former professional association football goalkeeper who played professionally in England, the North American Soccer League and Major Indoor Soccer League. Playing career On 13 January 1971, Hammond signed as an apprentice with English First Division club Crystal Palace. He remained in the Palace youth team until first team keeper, John Jackson was injured in 1972. While Hammond then became the starting keeper, his inexperience was a contributing factor to Palace's slide to the second division, then third division. In the midst of Palace's free fall through the English leagues, the team loaned Hammond to the Tampa Bay Rowdies (1975–1993), Tampa Bay Rowdies of the North American Soccer League for off-season training. Fritz Künzli
Friedrich "Fritz" Künzli (8 January 1946 – 22 December 2019) was a Swiss football player. From 1961 to 1979 he played in 313 matches in the Nationalliga A scoring a record 201 goals. In 1978, he played part of one season in the North American Soccer League. He was a leading goal scorer four times in the league and is one of only three players to lead the league in goals for two different clubs. He achieved his greatest success teaming with Köbi Kuhn at FC Zürich, winning two league championships, and four Swiss Cups. He earned 44 caps and scored 15 goals for Switzerland between 17 October 1965 and 16 November 1977. His international career includes two matches in the 1966 World Cup. After retiring from football, he operated a restaurant in Zürich with his wife, former actress and model, Monika Kaelin.
