Houle (geomorphology)
Houle, or more rarely goule, is the name given to cavities, particularly in rocks by the sea or in river banks,Ridel, Elisabeth, ''Les Vikings et les mots : L'apport de l'ancien scandinave à la langue française'' (in French), éditions errance, Paris, 2009, . and to caves and grottos in the cliffs of the Normandy coast, the Channel Islands and the north coast of Upper Brittany. An important folklore is associated with these places, due to the supposed presence of the ''Houles'' fairies, Fions and Jetins. Etymology Originally a Norman word, it has also spread to neighboring regions, as can be seen in the various dictionaries relating to this dialect. According to Joret, in his ''Dictionnaire du patois du Bessin'', ''hōle'', ''houōle'' has the meaning of "hollow where fish hide", then for Jean Fleury in ''Patois de la Hague'', it means "a hole, a cave, especially in rocks". Granville, Manche
Granville (; Norman: ''Graunville'') is a commune in the Manche department and region of Normandy, northwestern France. The chef-lieu of the canton of Granville and seat of the '' Communes of Granville, Terre et Mer'', it is a seaside resort and health resort of Mont Saint-Michel Bay, at the end of the '' Côte des Havres'', a former cod-fishing port and the first shellfish port of France. It is sometimes nicknamed "Monaco of the North" by virtue of its location on a rocky promontory. The town was founded by a vassal of William the Conqueror on land occupied by the Vikings in the 11th century. The old privateer city and fortification for the defence of Mont Saint-Michel became a seaside resort in the 19th century which was frequented by many artists and equipped with a golf course and a horse racing course. Cancale
Cancale (; ; Gallo: ''Cauncall'') is a commune in the Ille-et-Vilaine department in Brittany in northwestern France. It is known as the birthplace of Saint Jeanne Jugan. Population Inhabitants of Cancale are called ''Cancalais'' in French. Geography Location Cancale is located at the western end of the bay of Mont-Saint-Michel, on the coasts of Ille-et-Vilaine (Côte d'Émeraude), fifteen kilometers east of Saint-Malo. The bay of Cancale is delimited by the ''pointe des Roches Noires'' in the south and the ''pointe des Crolles'' in the north. Tourism Cancale lies along the coast to the east of Saint-Malo. It is a picturesque fishing port popular with visitors, many of whom are drawn by its reputation as the "oyster capital" of Brittany. Though a small town, it is well served by a large number of restaurants, many specialising in seafood. Gallo Language
Gallo ( endonym: ''Galo''; ) is a regional language of eastern Brittany. It is one of the langues d'oïl, a Romance sub-family that includes French. Today it is spoken only by a minority of the population, as the standard form of French now predominates in this area. Gallo was originally spoken in the Marches of Neustria, an area now corresponding to the border lands between Brittany, Normandy, and Maine. Gallo was a shared spoken language among many of those who took part in the Norman conquest of England, most of whom originated in Upper (i.e. eastern) Brittany and Lower (i.e. western) Normandy, and thus had its part, together with the much bigger role played by the Norman language, in the development of the Anglo-Norman variety of French which would have such a strong influence on English. Thiberville
Thiberville () is a Communes of France, commune in the Eure Departments of France, department in Normandy (administrative region), Normandy in northern France. It is 15 km east of Lisieux. In late 2024 the town made the news when Roger Thiberville, a meteorologist in Paris who had inherited a large family property portfolio, left the town almost all of his €10m fortune in his will. His only apparent connection to the town was from his family name, having never even visited himself. The sum represented about five times the annual town budget, and his only request was for his ashes to be placed in the town cemetery.
