Hot Docs Award For Best International Feature Documentary
The Hot Docs Award for Best International Feature Documentary is an annual Canadian film award, presented by the Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival to the film selected by jury members as the year's best international feature film in the festival program. The award was presented for the first time in 1998; prior to that year, awards were presented in various genre categories, but no special distinction between Canadian and international films was presented. The award jury also presents a Special Jury Prize to a second film besides the primary winner. Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival
The Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival is the largest documentary festival in North America. The event takes place annually in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The 27th edition of the festival took place online throughout May and June 2020. In addition to the annual festival, Hot Docs owns and operates the Hot Docs Ted Rogers Cinema, administers multiple production funds, and runs year-round screening programs including Doc Soup and Hot Docs Showcase. History Hot Docs was founded in 1993 by the Documentary Organization of Canada, previously known as the Canadian Independent Film Caucus. The DOC is a national association of independent filmmakers. Paul Jay, then chair of the CIFC, was the founding board chairperson and Debbie Nightingale was the event producer. Frances Reid (director)
Frances Reid is an American filmmaker, producer and cinematographer known for her documentaries. She has been in filmmaking for three decades. In 1994, she was nominated alongside director Dee Mosbacher for an Academy Award for Best Documentary Short for '' Straight from the Heart'', which explored relationships between straight parents and their gay children. She was again nominated for an Oscar for producing and directing '' Long Night's Journey into Day'' (2000). Yoav Shamir (), is an Israeli documentary filmmaker most noted for the films ''Checkpoint (2003 film), Checkpoint'' and ''Defamation (film), Defamation''. Paul Josiah Devlin is an American independent filmmaker. He is also a professional video editor, often working in sports broadcasting. Early life and education Devlin was born in 1963. While attending high school in New Jersey, Devlin penned a now widely shared "I reject your rejection" letter to the admissions department at Harvard University. The letter was published twice in the New York times, copied and re-purposed, as well as performed by prominent actors onstage through the London-based group Letters Live. ''Power Trip'' is a documentary film by director Paul Devlin that describes the electricity crisis in the country of Georgia several years after the fall of the Soviet Union. In 1999, Georgia's government sold the electric utility company Telasi to AES Corporation, a multinational company headquartered in Virginia. The film follows several AES-Telasi employees as the company tries to turn a profit and ensure that power is consistently available to customers in the face of widespread corruption and failure to pay electricity bills by both commercial and residential customers.
