German Youth Hostel Association
The German Youth Hostel Association () or DJH is a non-profit registered organization (''eingetragener Verein''). It was founded in 1919 to provide affordable and safe accommodation for travellers, especially schools, youth groups and individuals across Germany. Today, with 438 youth hostels, it caters to schools, youth groups and are also open to anyone else seeking an alternative to hotels like families, backpackers, business travellers, etc. Through the state (''Bundesland'') associations, it is the representative of the 438 youth hostels in Germany (as at 2021) and thus the largest member of the international youth association, Hostelling International (HI). Christmas Truce
The Christmas truce (; ; ) was a series of widespread unofficial ceasefires along the Western Front of the First World War around Christmas 1914. The truce occurred five months after hostilities had begun. Lulls occurred in the fighting as armies ran out of men and munitions and commanders reconsidered their strategies following the stalemate of the Race to the Sea and the indecisive result of the First Battle of Ypres. In the week leading up to 25 December, French, German, and British soldiers crossed trenches to exchange seasonal greetings and talk. Altena Castle
Altena Castle () is a medieval hill castle in the town of Altena in North Rhine-Westphalia. Built on a Spur (topography), spur of Klusenberg hill, the castle lies near the Lenne in the Märkischer Kreis. The castle was erected by the early Counts of Berg in the early 12th century. Eventually, the Berg (state), House of Berg abandoned Altena and moved their residence to Hamm, North Rhine-Westphalia, Hamm. History Supposedly, the castle was built by the brothers Adolf and Everhard von Berg around the year 1108 after Henry V, Holy Roman Emperor, Henry V granted them land in Sauerland for their loyal services. Richard Schirrmann
Richard Schirrmann (15 May 1874 – 14 December 1961) was a German teacher and founder of the first hostel. Early life and education Schirrmann was born in Grunenfeld, Province of Prussia (now Gronówko, Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship). His father, August Schirrmann was a teacher. Career Richard Schirrmann became a teacher in 1895 after passing his teacher's examination in Karalene, near Insterburg, and was used as a teacher in the Kirchschule Königshöhe in Lötzen, then in Schrombehnen in Pr. Eylau. He took every opportunity to hold outdoors lessons. In 1903, he was transferred to Nette-Schule in Altena, Province of Westphalia where he met Wilhelm Münker, who later became his partner. In August 1909, after a stormy school camping trip, Schirrmann proposed the idea of affordable youth travel gaining significant support and opened a makeshift hostel for hikers in his school. Curfew
A curfew is an order that imposes certain regulations during specified hours. Typically, curfews order all people affected by them to remain indoors during the evening and nighttime hours. Snoring
Snoring is an abnormal breath sound caused by partially obstructed, turbulent airflow and vibration of tissues in the upper respiratory tract (e.g., uvula, soft palate, base of tongue) which occurs during sleep.
