Anette E. "Peko" Hosoi is an American mechanical engineer, biophysicist, and mathematician, currently the Neil and Jane Pappalardo Professor of Mechanical Engineering and associate dean of engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Contributions Hosoi's research interests include fluid dynamics, unconventional robotics, and bio-inspired design. For instance, one of her projects developed a robot that moved like a snail by extruding artificial snail slime and rippling over it. She has also studied how razor clams turn sand into quicksand while digging themselves in, and designed wetsuits using materials that mimic the thermal insulation properties of otter fur. She is the founder of a sports engineering program at MIT, which she started in 2011 after frustration at the performance of her cross-country bicycle on a downhill bicycling course. Christian Rosha Hosoi ( ; born October 5, 1967) is an American professional skateboarder. He is also known by the nicknames "Christ" and "Holmes". Early life Hosoi was born on October 5, 1967 to a father of Japanese descent from Hawaii, and a mother of European and American descent. He grew up in Los Angeles and Hawaii. Skateboard career Hosoi started skating at seven or eight years old with veterans such as Shogo Kubo, Tony Alva, Stacy Peralta, and Jay Adams as his idols. His father, Ivan "Pops" Hosoi became the manager of the Marina Del Rey Skatepark, and Christian quit school and spent his time there where he developed his skill. In 1979, as an amateur, Hosoi was sponsored by Powell Peralta. He left Powell Peralta a year later when they would not allow him to turn professional and joined Dogtown Skateboards. Life Born in Hirashima Village, Owari Province, to a wealthy scholar family who later gave up their status to become farmers, Hosoi spent the first nine years of his life there as a student in a local temple. Nittatsu Hosoi (細 井 日 達, ''Hosoi Nittatsu'' also known as Nittatsu Shonin; 15 April 1902, Tokyo – 22 June 1979) was the 66th High Priest of the Nichiren Shoshu Head Temple Taisekiji in Fujinomiya, Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan. Previously, he served as chief priest at Hondenji temple in Osaka and Jozaiji temple in Ikebukuro, Tokyo. Nittatsu expelled the Kenshokai and was the first High Priest to publicly criticize the Soka Gakkai for allegedly deviating from the traditionalist doctrines of Nichiren Shoshu. He later threatened its senior leaders to remove the Dai Gohonzon from their funded building, the Shohondo, later demolished by his successor Nikken Abe.
