Horst Rosenthal
Horst Sigmund Rosenthal (10 August 1915 – 11 September 1942) was a German-born French cartoonist of Jewish descent. He is best known for his 1942 French comic book ''Mickey au Camp de Gurs'' (''Mickey Mouse in the Gurs Internment Camp'') which he created while he was a prisoner at the Gurs internment camp in France during World War II. He was later transferred to the Auschwitz concentration camp in German-occupied Poland where he was executed. Rosenthal also created two other French comic books while incarcerated in Gurs, ''La Journée d'un Hébergé'' (''A Day in the Life of a Camp Resident'') and ''Petit Guide à travers le Camp de Gurs'' (''Little Guide Through the Gurs Camp''). The three books were first published in October 2014 by Calmann-Lévy and the Mémorial de la Shoah in Paris, 72 years after they were written. Galerie Lambiek is a Dutch comic book store and art gallery in Amsterdam, founded on November 8, 1968 by Kees Kousemaker (, – Bussum, ), though since 2007, his son Boris Kousemaker is the current owner. From 1968 to 2015, it was located in the Kerkstraat, but in November 2015, the store moved to the Koningsstraat 27. As of 2018, Lambiek is the oldest comics store in Europe, and the oldest worldwide still in existence. The name "Lambiek" originated as a misspelling of the name of the comics character Lambik, from the popular Suske & Wiske comic book series created by Belgian artist Willy Vandersteen. Elsbeth Kasser (11 May 1910 – 15 May 1992), known as Angel of Gurs, was a Swiss nurse and humanitarian aid worker for refugees in the internment camp of Gurs, located in Southern France from 1940 to 1943, and in other places. Biography Born on 11 May 1910 in Niederscherli, Bern, Switzerland, Elsbeth Kasser was the daughter of Karl Friedrich Hermann Kasser and Anna von Gruyeres. After finishing her school education, she learned foreign languages in French-speaking Switzerland and in England. She later started her professional career as a nurse in Thun, and Bern. Through one of her relatives, she was introduced to Regina Kägi-Fuchsmann (1889 –1972), who was mobilizing humanitarian aid for Spain, which was defeated during the Spanish Civil War. The Center for Contemporary Jewish Documentation is an independent French organization founded by Isaac Schneersohn in 1943 in the town of Grenoble, France during the Second World War to preserve the evidence of Nazi war crimes for future generations.
