Horseshoe Bend, New South Wales
Horseshoe Bend is an inner city suburb in the City of Maitland in the Hunter Region of New South Wales, Australia. It is named for the shape made by the Hunter River flowing through the area as it was observed by early European settlers. It is sometimes colloquially referred to by residents as "The Bend". History The traditional owners and custodians of the Maitland area are the Wonnarua people. One of the earliest settled areas in Maitland, it is characterised by narrow streets and laneways, as well as a mixture of architectural styles spanning the 19th and 20th centuries. South Maitland is an inner city suburb in the City of Maitland in the Hunter Region of New South Wales, Australia. It is located immediately south of the New England Highway and Main North railway line, which separate the suburb from the Maitland central business district. 1955 Hunter Valley Floods
The Hunter Valley Floods (also known as the Maitland Flood) of 23 February 1955 was a major flood on the Hunter River in New South Wales, Australia. They were one of the most devastating natural disasters in Australia's history. The flood overwhelmed rivers on both sides of the Great Dividing Range, creating an inland sea the size of England and Wales. Worst hit was the inland city of Maitland, which is sited precariously on low-lying land on the Hunter, and which on this occasion was completely inundated by floodwaters. Wonnarua
The Wonnarua people, otherwise written Wanarruwa, are a group of Aboriginal Australian people united by strong ties of kinship, and who survived in family groups or clans scattered along the inland area of what is now known as the Upper Hunter Valley, New South Wales, Australia. Their creation spirit is ''Baiami'', also known as ''Koin'', the creator of all things and the ''Keeper of the Valley''. Language The origin of the Wonnarua language is unclear; however, linguists group closely-related dialects together under the description "language of the Hunter River/Lake Macquarie" (HRLM). That term denotes the geographical location of the closely-related dialects rather than the name of the language group.
