Hornelen
Hornelen is a mountain in Bremanger municipality in Vestland county, Norway. The mountain sits on the eastern end of the island of Bremangerlandet, along the Frøysjøen strait, in the Nordfjord region of Norway. At , it is the highest sea cliff in Europe (see illustration left), and has for a long time been used as a landmark for naval navigation. The horizontal distance from the summit to the sea is approximately . Approximately to the west of the cliffside is the highest point on the island Bremangerlandet, called Svartevassegga which has an elevation of . The rock in Hornelen consists of sandstone of Devonian age, and it constitutes an important part of the geology of Norway. Access and modern tourism There are two possible routes to reach the summit. Hornelen Basin
The Hornelen Basin is a sedimentary basin in Vestland, Norway, containing an estimated 25 km stratigraphic thickness of coarse clastic rock, clastic sedimentary rocks of Devonian age. It forms part of a group of basins of similar age along the west coast of Norway between Sognefjord and Nordfjord, related to movement on the Nordfjord-Sogn Detachment. It formed as a result of extensional tectonics as part of the post-orogenic collapse of crust (geology), crust that was thickened during the Caledonian Orogeny towards the end of the Silurian period. It is named for the mountain Hornelen on the northern margin of the basin. Bremanger
Bremanger is a municipality in Vestland county, Norway. The village of Svelgen is the administrative centre of the municipality. Other villages include Bremanger, Berle, Davik, Isane, Kalvåg, Svelgen, Rugsund, and Ålfoten. Bremanger is the only municipality in Vestland, which is located in two districts. The northern and eastern parts comprising the villages of Oldeide, Berle, Rugsund, Davik, Isane, and Ålfoten is located in the Nordfjord region, while the villages of Bremanger, Kalvåg, Svelgen, Sørgulen, and Botnane are located in the Sunnfjord region. Bremangerlandet
Bremangerlandet is an island in Bremanger Municipality in the traditional district of Nordfjord in Vestland county, Norway. The island is one of the largest islands in the county. The highest point on the island is the tall mountain Svartevassegga, however the cliff at Hornelen, located to the east, is more well-known and has an elevation of . The long lake Dalevatnet is located in the central part of the island. The island is located northeast of the smaller island of Frøya. Bremangerlandet island lies on the southern side of the mouth of the large Nordfjorden and the island of Vågsøy lies on the north side of the fjord's mouth. Frøysjøen
Frøysjøen is a fjord (or more accurately, a strait) in Bremanger Municipality in Vestland county, Norway. The fjord is about long and between wide. The fjord runs on a northeast–southwest axis between the mainland of Norway (on the east) and the islands of Bremangerlandet and Frøya (on the west). The Gulen fjord branches off the Frøysjøen to the east. The main settlements along the fjord include Kalvåg and Berle on the western shore.
