Local activities Hornberg is the location of the Duravit Design Center. The center has a viewing platform designed by Philippe Starck. This viewing platform is arguably the largest toilet bowl in the world. Duravit also has a production facility in Hornberg. The family brewery M. Ketterer GmbH & Co.KG is also located in Hornberg. Black Forest Railway (German: Schwarzwaldbahn) Hornberg has a railway station on the Black Forest Railway. Black Forest Railway (Baden)
The Baden Black Forest Railway (German: ''Badische Schwarzwaldbahn'') is a Double-track railway, twin-track, electrified railway line in Baden-Württemberg, Germany, running in a NW-SE direction to link Offenburg on the Rhine Valley Railway (''Rheintalbahn'') with Singen on the High Rhine Railway (''Hochrheinbahn''). Passing directly across the Black Forest, through spectacular scenery, the route is 150 km long, ascends 650 metres from lowest to highest elevation, and passes through 39 tunnels and over 2 viaducts. It is still the only true mountain railway in Germany to be built with two tracks, and is the most important railway line in the Black Forest. It was built between 1863 and 1873, utilizing plans drawn up by Robert Gerwig. The Black Forest ( ) is a large forested mountain range in the States of Germany, state of Baden-Württemberg in southwest Germany, bounded by the Rhine Valley to the west and south and close to the borders with France and Switzerland. Wilhelm Hausenstein
Wilhelm Hausenstein (17 June 1882 – 3 June 1957) was a German politician, writer, journalist, art critic, historian and diplomat. He was the first German ambassador to France following World War II. Life and career Early life Hausenstein was born in Hornberg to the family of a tax official of the Grand Duchy of Baden. His father died when Wilhelm was only nine years old. After attending the gymnasium in Karlsruhe, he studied in Heidelberg, Tübingen and Munich. In 1907 he joined the Social Democratic Party and was active in its workers' education company ''Forward''. As a result, a habilitation was impossible. Hausenstein then became a freelance writer. In 1908 he married Marga Schröder, the adopted daughter of a Bremen merchant. Hausenstein, drawing inspiration from Karl Marx, defended expressionism as the social art par excellence for the future. Friedrich August Jeckeln (2 February 1895 – 3 February 1946) was a German Nazi Party member, police official and SS-'' Obergruppenführer'' during the Nazi era. He served as a Higher SS and Police Leader in Germany and in the occupied Soviet Union during World War II. Jeckeln was the commander of one of the largest groups of ''Einsatzgruppen'' death squads and was personally responsible for ordering and organising the deaths of over 100,000 Jews, Romani and others designated by the Nazis as "undesirables". After the end of the war in Europe, Jeckeln was convicted of war crimes by a Soviet military tribunal in Riga and executed by hanging. Ortenaukreis (; ) is a ''Landkreis'' (district) in the west of Baden-Württemberg, Germany. Neighboring districts are (clockwise from north) Rastatt, Freudenstadt, Rottweil, Schwarzwald-Baar and Emmendingen. To the west it borders the French Bas-Rhin ''département''. History The district was created in 1973 by merging the districts of Kehl, Lahr, Offenburg, Wolfach and the southern part of the district of Bühl. Wolfgang Schäuble (; 18 September 1942 – 26 December 2023) was a German politician whose political career spanned more than five decades.
