Horadiz
Horadiz is a city and municipality in the Fuzuli District of Azerbaijan, located on the left bank of the Aras river. As of 2019, it had a population of 7,600 people. History During the Russian Empire, the village of Horadiz was part of the Jebrail Uyezd of Elisabethpol Governorate. According to the "Caucasian calendar" of 1912, the village had 1,424 inhabitants, the majority of whom were Azerbaijanis, who were listed as "Tatars" in the calendar. Horadiz was designated as an urban-type settlement on 24 September 1947. It had a population of 5,689 people according to the 1989 Soviet census. During the First Nagorno-Karabakh War, the village was the scene of fierce fighting. Operation Horadiz
Operation Horadiz () was a battle during the First Nagorno-Karabakh War between the Azerbaijani Armed Forces and the Armenian Armed Forces in Horadiz village of Fuzuli District of the Republic of Azerbaijan, which began in December 1993 and lasted until January 6. History Background The Armenians, who captured Gubadly in late August 1993, declared a ceasefire because they needed to regroup and had to wait for new weapons and troops to arrive from Armenia. In late October, Armenian troops quickly captured Horadiz on the Azerbaijani-Iranian border, cutting off Zangilan's connection to Azerbaijani territory. Zangilan finally fell in 29 October 1993 into Armenian hands. In December 1993, Armenian armed forces attempted to move east of Fuzuli, but encountered unexpected resistance and were forced to retreat. Fuzuli District
Fuzuli District () is one of the 66 districts of Azerbaijan. It is located in the south-west of the country and belongs to the Karabakh Economic Region. The district borders the districts of Khojavend, Aghjabadi, Beylagan, Jabrayil, and the Ardabil Province of Iran. Its capital is Fuzuli, however since the city is completely ruined following the First Nagorno-Karabakh War, the current '' de facto'' capital is Horadiz until Fuzuli is rebuilt. As of 2020, the district had a nominal population of 133,800. Fuzuli State Drama Theatre
The Fuzuli State Drama Theatre () is a professional state drama theatre operating in the Fuzuli District of Azerbaijan. History The first professional theatre in the city of Fuzuli (known as Karyagino until 1959) was the Karyagino Collective Farmers' Theatre, established in 1930. In 1943, it received the status of a state drama theatre. However, in 1949, as part of the global transition of Soviet drama theatres to self-financing, the theatre was closed down. A new chapter began in 1961 when a folk theatre was founded, uniting 37 of the most talented amateur actors from the previous theatre company. In 1989, the Fuzuli Drama Theatre was officially re-established following a decree from the Cabinet of Ministers of the Azerbaijan SSR. First Nagorno-Karabakh War
The First Nagorno-Karabakh War was an ethnic conflict, ethnic and territorial conflict that took place from February 1988 to May 1994, in the enclave of Nagorno-Karabakh in southwestern Azerbaijan, between the majority ethnic Armenians of Nagorno-Karabakh backed by Armenia, and the Republic of Azerbaijan with support from Turkey. The 1989 Soviet census (), conducted between 12 and 19 January of that year, was the final census carried out in the Soviet Union. The census found the total population to be 286,730,819 inhabitants. Urban-type Settlement
Urban-type settlement, abbreviated: ; , abbreviated: ; ; ; ; . is an official designation for lesser urbanized settlements, used in several Central and Eastern Europe, Central and Eastern European countries. The term was primarily used in the Soviet Union and later also for a short time in People's Republic of Bulgaria, socialist Bulgaria and Polish People's Republic, socialist Poland. It remains in use today in nine of the post-Soviet states. The designation was used in all 15 member republics of the Soviet Union from 1922. The Jebrail ''uezd'', also known after 1905 as the Karyagino uezd, was a county (''uezd'') of the Elizavetpol Governorate of the Russian Empire with its center in Jebrail (Jabrayil) from 1873 until its formal abolition in 1921 by the Soviet authorities. Geography The Jebrayil ''uezd'' was located in the southeastern part of Elizavetpol Governorate bordering its Shusha uezd to the north, Zangezur uezd to the west, Baku Governorate to the east, and Qajar Iran, Persia to the south.
