Hope Arthurine Anderson
Hope Arthurine Anderson (June 2, 1950, in Port Antonio – March 24, 2016 ) was a Jamaican chess champion. Biography Anderson was the sixth of eight children born to a policeman, Arthur, and a seamstress, Iris. She attended Titchfield High School in Port Antonio, and then Excelsior High School in Kingston where her teachers noted her facility with mathematics. She also displayed a talent for music. She played the piano and was a voice student of Jamaican soprano Pauline Forrest-Watson. Anderson trained as a mezzo-soprano. She graduated from the Royal School of Music, Kingston. On a professional level however, she moved away from music and into the sciences, teaching math and chemistry. She went on to earn a master's in Computer Based Management Information Systems and become a physician. Port Antonio
Port Antonio is the capital of the parish of Portland on the northeastern coast of Jamaica, about from Kingston. It had a population of 12,285 in 1982 and 13,246 in 1991. The Elo rating system is a method for calculating the relative skill levels of players in zero-sum games such as chess. It is named after its creator Arpad Elo, a Hungarian-American physics professor. The Elo system was invented as an improved chess-rating system over the previously used Harkness system, but is also used as a rating system in association football, American football, baseball, basketball, pool, table tennis, and various board games and esports. The difference in the ratings between two players serves as a predictor of the outcome of a match. Two players with equal ratings who play against each other are expected to score an equal number of wins. Titchfield High School
Titchfield High School is a secondary high school in Port Antonio, Jamaica, in the northern part of Portland Parish. The school was established in January 1786, and is the fifth-oldest high school in the country, after Wolmer's Boys', one of the Wolmer's Schools (1729), Manning's School (1738), St. Jago High School (1744), and Rusea's High School (1777). In the 18th century, these schools originated from their benefactors’ concerns for the education of the country’s poor, usually the children of poor whites, as there was no system in place for the education of the children of slaves. In 1883, the Jamaica School Commission took over the management of the school from the school's trust. According to the Alumni Association of Titchfield High, South Florida chapter, as of January 2008, there were 99 teachers for 1949 students in grades 7-13.
