Hoogezand
Hoogezand is a town in the municipality of Midden-Groningen, in the province of Groningen in northeast Netherlands. History The name refers to a higher sanded ''(Hooge Sandt)'' place in the peatlands cut through when the Winschoterdiep channel was dug. Near this channel in 1618 the town was founded. In the beginning the town was a center of peat briquettes producing. When the peat ran out opened factories for cardboard and plants for potato processing . At the moment Hoogezand is most known for the shipbuilding industry. On the shipyards the vessels are launched sideways, which is uncommon for slipways. In 1821 Hoogezand absorbed former municipality Windeweer. In 1949 Hoogezand and Sappemeer became one city. At the moment Hoogezand-Sappemeer has 34,438 citizens (2005), around 21,000 of them live in Hoogezand. Hoogezand-Sappemeer Railway Station
Hoogezand-Sappemeer (; abbreviation: Hgz) is an unstaffed railway station in Hoogezand in the Netherlands. It is located on the Harlingen–Nieuweschans railway between Martenshoek and Sappemeer Oost in the province of Groningen. Train services started in 1868 and the current station building was completed in 1989. There are currently three train services, all operated by Arriva. Among the direct destinations are Groningen to the west, Veendam to the southeast, and Winschoten, Bad Nieuweschans, and Leer (Germany) to the east. Winschoterdiep
The Winschoterdiep () is a canal in the province Groningen of the Netherlands. It leads to the Rensel, which is actually part of this canal. Construction was started in 1618 and finished in 1634. The Winschoterdiep's total length is 35.5 kilometres, and it is approximately 100 metres in width. Sixteen bridges and locks are built across this canal, as well as many other passages. Ships must be less than 16 m in breadth to pass through some of these. It is one of the oldest canals ever built in Groningen still in use. In the section between Hoogezand and Waterhuizen, there are several shipwharfs. Hoogezand was founded near the canal in 1618. Slochteren
Slochteren () is a village and former municipality with a population of 15,546 in the province of Groningen in the northeast of the Netherlands. On 1 January 2018, Slochteren merged with Hoogezand-Sappemeer and Menterwolde, forming the municipality Midden-Groningen. The former municipality can be characterized as a chain of small villages dividing a mostly agricultural landscape.
