Honorato Del Castillo
Honorato del Castillo (November 30, 1838 – July 20, 1869) was a Cuban revolutionary and army general who played a key role in the Ten Years' War in Cuba. Early life Honorato Andrés del Castillo y Cancio was born in Sancti Spíritus, Las Villas, Spanish Cuba, on November 30, 1838. Castillo studied and subsequently taught at the "El Salvador" school led by José de la Luz y Caballero. He was multilingual and graduated as a Doctor of Medicine before the war. Ten Years' War Honorato del Castillo joined the war of independence against Spain following the Cry of Yara by Carlos Manuel de Céspedes on October 10, 1868. On April 10, 1869, he served as a delegate of Sancti Spíritus at the Guáimaro constituent assembly. He was among the citizen deputies who voted for the Guáimaro Constitution. Sancti Spíritus () is a municipality and capital city of the province of Sancti Spíritus in central Cuba and one of the oldest Cuban European settlements. Guáimaro is a town and municipality in the southern part of Camagüey Province in Cuba. It is located between the cities of Camagüey and Las Tunas (city), Las Tunas. History Guáimaro features prominently in Cuban history as the place where in 1869, at the beginning of the Ten Years' War, the Revolutionary Army of Mambises met and created the Guáimaro Constitution for a new nation free from Spanish colonial oppression. Morón, Cuba
Morón is a city and a municipality in Ciego de Ávila Province in central Cuba. It is one of ten municipalities in the province, and is the second in importance and the oldest. Morón is the closest city to the tourist resorts on Cayo Coco and Cayo Guillermo. Federico Fernández Cavada
Federico Fernández Cavada (July 8, 1831July 1, 1871) was an officer in the Union Army during the American Civil War and a diplomat, as well as commander-in-chief of all the Cuban forces during Cuba's Ten Years' War. Because of his artistic talents, he was assigned to the Hot Air Balloon Unit of the Union Army. From the air he sketched what he observed of enemy positions and movements. On April 19, 1862, Fernández Cavada sketched enemy positions from Thaddeus Lowe's ''Constitution'' balloon during the Peninsular Campaign in Virginia. At the rank of lieutenant colonel, he was captured during the Battle of Gettysburg and sent to Libby Prison for Union officers in Richmond, Virginia. Mambises
The mambises were the guerrilla independence soldiers who fought for the independence from Spain of the Dominican Republic in the Dominican Restoration War (1863–1865), and of Cuba in the Ten Years' War (1868–1878), Little War (1879–1880), and Cuban War of Independence (1895–1898).
