Hongshi Dam
The Hongshi Dam is a gravity dam on the Second Songhua River located east of Huadian in Jilin Province, China. The primary purpose of the dam is hydroelectric power generation and its power plant has an installed capacity of 200 MW. Construction on the dam began in 1982 and the reservoir began to fill in November 1985. The first generator was operational in December 1985 and the last in October 1987. The tall dam creates a reservoir with a normal storage capacity of . The dam is named after the town of Hongshi, located downstream. The Kaplan turbine is a propeller-type water turbine which has adjustable blades. It was developed in 1913 by Austrian professor Viktor Kaplan, who combined automatically adjusted propeller blades with automatically adjusted Wicket gate (hydraulics), wicket gates to achieve efficiency over a wide range of flow and hydraulic head, water level. A gravity dam is a dam constructed from concrete or stone masonry and designed to hold back water by using only the weight of the material and its resistance against the foundation. Gravity dams are designed so that each section of the dam is stable and independent of any other dam section.
