Hong Kong Railway Inspectorate
The Hong Kong Railway Inspectorate (HKRI) was formerly a small regulatory body within the Transport and Housing Bureau, responsible for overseeing the safe operation of railways in Hong Kong. In February 2008, it was absorbed into the Electrical and Mechanical Services Department as its Railways Branch, having always received substantial technical support, including most of its staff, from EMSD. The HKRI oversaw the railway lines operated by the MTR Corporation and the automated people mover operated by the Airport Authority in the terminal building of the Hong Kong International Airport. It was earlier responsible for the railway lines operated by the former Kowloon-Canton Railway Corporation. Transport And Housing Bureau
The Transport and Housing Bureau (THB) was an agency of the Government of Hong Kong between 2007 and 2022, responsible for a range of policies such as the internal and external transportation, including air transport, land transport, maritime transport, logistics and housing development in Hong Kong. The bureau was headed by the Secretary for Transport and Housing (STH). The bureau was formed on 1 July 2007 to take over the transport portfolios previously under the purview of the Environment, Transport and Works Bureau, and the public housing portfolios of the Housing, Planning and Lands Bureau. The Electrical and Mechanical Services Department (EMSD; ) is a Hong Kong government department responsible for inspection and enforcement of operation and safety of many electricity and gas installations; railways and trams; lifts and escalators; amusement rides; working platforms on building sites, and many other diverse areas. A people mover or automated people mover (APM) is a type of small scale automated guideway transit system. The term is generally used only to describe systems serving relatively small areas such as airports, downtown districts or theme parks. Kowloon-Canton Railway Corporation
The Kowloon-Canton Railway Corporation (KCRC; ) is a Hong Kong wholly government-owned railway and land asset manager. It was established in 1982 under the Kowloon-Canton Railway Corporation Ordinance for the purposes of operating the Kowloon–Canton Railway (KCR), and to construct and operate other new railways. On 2 December 2007, the MTR Corporation Limited (MTRCL), another railway operator in Hong Kong, took over the operations of the KCR network under a 50-year service concession agreement, which can be extended. Under the service concession, KCRC retains ownership of the KCR network with the MTRCL making annual payments to KCRC for the right to operate the network. Future Projects Of The MTR
Several future projects on the MTR have been put forward by the MTR Corporation to the Hong Kong Government. Some of these are still in planning stage, some are now completed. With the rail merger with the Kowloon-Canton Railway Corporation in 2007, the combined network increased to and 84 stations.
