Homestead (meteorite)
Homestead is a L5 meteorite fallen on 12 February 1875 in Iowa, United States, first described by Gustavus Detlef Hinrichs. Sometimes called the Amana meteorite because of the nearby Amana Colonies it was called the Homestead meteorite, because Homestead, Iowa was the nearest train station. The Amana meteorites also include a large meteorite fallen in May 1879. History On the evening of 12 February 1875 above Iowa a brilliant fireball was observed. It produced a variety of rumbling sounds and detonations, which shook houses "as if moved by an earthquake". About 100 meteorite fragments fell over a snowy countryside area from Amana to Boltonville in Iowa County. Ordinary Chondrite
The ordinary chondrites (sometimes called the O chondrites) are a class of stony chondritic meteorites. They are by far the most numerous group, comprising 87% of all finds. Hence, they have been dubbed "ordinary". The ordinary chondrites are thought to have originated from three parent asteroids, with the fragments making up the H chondrite, L chondrite and LL chondrite groups respectively. Origin It is suspected that they are not representative of typical asteroid parent bodies, but rather of a select few which are advantageously placed to send impact fragments to Earth-crossing orbits. Such positions are e.g. near Kirkwood gaps and/or secular resonances in the main asteroid belt. Estherville, Iowa
Estherville is a city in Emmet County, Iowa, United States. The population was 5,904 in the 2020 census, a decline from 6,656 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Emmet County. History Emmet County was initially created by an act of the Iowa Legislature in 1851. The area that is now Estherville had its first settlers around 1856 and into 1857. The city was selected as the county seat in 1859, and was eventually incorporated in 1881. Estherville was named after Esther A. Ridley, one of the first white female settlers in the area. Many of Estherville's current residents are the descendants of the original Scandinavian, German and Irish immigrants that arrived in the community in the 1870s.
