Homer Hamilton
William Homer Hamilton (February 6, 1913 in Carman, Manitoba, Carman, Manitoba – September 29, 1997) was a politician in Manitoba, Canada. He was a Progressive Conservative Party of Manitoba, Progressive Conservative member of the Legislative Assembly of Manitoba from 1959 to 1969. The son of John Love Hamilton and Sadie Louise Kilpatrick, Hamilton was educated in Sperling, Manitoba, Sperling and at Dominion Business College. In 1932, he became manager of the Ogilvie Flour Mills elevator in Saltcoats, Saskatchewan, returning to Manitoba in 1936. Hamilton worked as a grain farmer until 1963. He was appointed Drainage Maintenance Superintendent of Dufferin, Manitoba, Dufferin in 1946, and became a trustee on the Sperling Cons. School in 1951. Carman is a small agricultural town of about 3,000 people in the Pembina Valley Region of southern Manitoba, Canada. Carman is at the junction of Highways 3 and 13, 40 minutes southwest of Winnipeg. Walter McDonald (politician)
Walter Clifton McDonald (March 16, 1903 in Roland, Manitoba – November 7, 1999) was a politician in Manitoba, Canada. He served in the Legislative Assembly of Manitoba as a Liberal-Progressive from 1949 to 1959. Born to a wealthy land-owning family, the son of John Albert McDonald and Alice Grace Carr, McDonald was educated in Roland and at Wesley College in Winnipeg, Manitoba. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1925, and worked in insurance and real estate. McDonald later served on the Board of Regents for United College in Winnipeg. He was also active in freemasonry, and became Grant Master of the Grand Lodge of Manitoba in 1948-49. He became a thirty-third degree mason in 1955. In 1930, he married Jean McKay. They had five children. He was first elected to the Manitoba legislature in the 1949 provincial election, defeating Independent Progressive Conservative G.R. Jack Burnett Murta, (born May 13, 1943) is a former Canadian politician. Born in Carman, Manitoba, the son of John James Murta and Jean (Burnett) Murta, he graduated from the Diploma course in Agriculture at the University of Manitoba in 1964. In 1970, he was elected to the House of Commons of Canada as a Progressive Conservative in a by-election for the riding of Lisgar following the death of the previous incumbent, George Muir. He was re-elected in 1972, 1974, 1979, 1980, and 1984. He was Parliamentary Secretary to the President of the Treasury Board in the short lived government of Joe Clark in 1979. Walter Weir
Walter Cocksmith Weir (June 7, 1929 – April 17, 1985) was a Canadian politician. Weir served as the 15th premier of Manitoba from 1967 to 1969. The son of James Dixon Weir, he was born in Hugh Bluff, Manitoba and was educated there and in Portage la Prairie. Weir worked as an undertaker in Saskatchewan, later returning to Manitoba where he became the owner of his own funeral home in Minnedosa in 1953. In 1951, he married Harriet Thompson. Weir served as chairman of the Minnedosa Hospital Board from 1955 to 1957, and of the Minnedosa Town Council from 1958 to 1959. He sought the Progressive Conservative nomination for Minnedosa in the buildup to the 1958 provincial election, but lost to Sid Paler. He later defeated Paler for the party's nomination in the buildup to the 1959 provincial election; there was no lasting animosity between the candidates, and Paler served as Weir's campaign manager in the election that followed. Dufferin Roblin
Dufferin "Duff" Roblin, (June 17, 1917 – May 30, 2010) was a Canadian businessman and politician. He served as the 14th premier of Manitoba from 1958 to 1967. Roblin was appointed to the Senate of Canada on the advice of Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau. In the government of Brian Mulroney, he served as government leader in the Senate. He was the grandson of Sir Rodmond Roblin, who also served as Manitoba Premier. His ancestor John Roblin served in the Upper Canada assembly. Early life Roblin was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, to Charles Dufferin Roblin and Sophie Murdoch, and was educated at the University of Manitoba and the University of Chicago. 1959 Manitoba General Election
The 1959 Manitoba general election was held on May 14, 1959 to elect 57 members to the Legislative Assembly of Manitoba, Canada. It resulted in a majority victory for the incumbent Progressive Conservatives under the leadership of Premier Dufferin Roblin. It was the first time since the 1914 election that the Tories won an outright majority in the province. Roblin's Tories won 36 seats against 11 for the Liberal-Progressives, led by former Premier Douglas Campbell, and 10 for the social democratic Co-operative Commonwealth Federation led by Lloyd Stinson. Dufferin (Manitoba Riding)
Dufferin is a former provincial electoral division in Manitoba, Canada. It was originally created in 1879 as two divisions, Dufferin North and Dufferin South. Dufferin was consolidated into a single constituency for the 1888 provincial election, but was eliminated with the 1892 election. Dufferin returned to the electoral map for the 1903 election, and was eliminated through redistribution in 1969. The constituency was represented for many years by Rodmond Roblin, who served as Premier of Manitoba from 1900 to 1915. Roblin's grandson, who also served as premier, was named "Dufferin". The Manitoba Liberal Party (french: Parti libéral du Manitoba) is a political party in Manitoba, Canada. Its roots can be traced to the late 19th century, following the province's creation in 1870.
