Homebush Grammar School
Homebush Grammar School was an independent non-denominational day school for boys located in Albert Road Strathfield, New South Wales. At the time Albert Road was listed as being in Homebush hence the name of the school. History The school was founded in 1892 and ran until 1914 with the school site being sold in 1915 for residential development. The principal and proprietor of the school was W.B. Scott who was a graduate of Trinity College, Dublin. Scott had earlier been assistant principal to David Joseph Sly when in 1888 he opened Eton College in Homebush. That school closed in 1892 when Sly voluntarily became a bankrupt. On its foundation the second master of Homebush Grammar was J. H. Smairl B.A., a graduate of the University of Sydney. After being awarded a Master of Arts by Sydney University he became headmaster. When Homebush Grammar School closed Smairl was appointed an English and history teacher at Sydney Boys High School. Day School
A day school — as opposed to a boarding school — is an educational institution where children are given instruction during the day, after which the students return to their homes. Antonio Dattilo Rubbo
Antonio Salvatore Dattilo Rubbo (Napoli 21 June 1870 – Sydney 1 June 1955) was an Italian-born artist and art teacher active in Australia from 1897. Rubbo, or Dattilo-Rubbo, was born in Naples in 1870, and spent his early childhood in the Neapolitan municipality of Frattamaggiore. He studied painting under Domenico Morelli and Filippo Palizzi before emigrating to Australia, arriving in Sydney in 1897. From 1898 Rubbo taught in Sydney schools including St. Joseph's College, Hunters Hill, Kambala School, The Scots College, Newington College and Homebush Grammar School. Dattilo Rubbo was not a great artist – "muddy genre portraits of very wrinkled old Tuscan peasants were his strong suit," according to critic Robert Hughes (critic), Robert Hughes – but he was an inspiring art teacher, responsible for introducing a whole generation of Australian painters to modernism through his art school (opened in 1898) and his classes at the Royal Art Society of New South Wales. Sir Samuel Hordern (24 September 1876 – 3 June 1956) was an Australian businessman, animal breeder and philanthropist. Born into the prominent Sydney trading family, Hordern directed the family company of Anthony Hordern & Sons from 1909 to 1926. Early years Samuel Hordern was born on 24 September 1876 at Retford Hall, Darling Point in Sydney, the eldest son of Samuel Hordern and Jane Maria Booth. His father was the grandson of Anthony Hordern I, who established the eponymous store as a drapery shop in 1823, and his mother was the daughter of prominent Sydney produce merchant and later Alderman, John Booth. Educated at Sydney Grammar School and Bath College in England, Hordern returned to Sydney in 1895 to take up employment in the family business. This is a list of mayors of the Council of the Municipality of Strathfield, a local government area in the Inner West region of Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. First incorporated on 2 June 1885 as the "Municipal District of Strathfield" the first council was convened and elected on 19 August 1885, which later changed to the "Municipality of Strathfield" following the passing of the 1906 Local Government Act. The council became known as "Strathfield Council" on 1 July 1993 following the enactment of a new Local Government Act, which also stipulated a change of title from "Alderman" to "Councillor". George Reid
Sir George Houston Reid (25 February 1845 – 12 September 1918) was a Scottish-born Australian and British politician, diplomat, and barrister who served as the fourth Prime Minister of Australia, prime minister of Australia from 1904 to 1905. He held office as the leader of the Free Trade Party, previously serving as the 12th premier of New South Wales from 1894 to 1899, and later as the Australian High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, high commissioner of Australia to the United Kingdom from 1910 to 1916. Hubert Cunliffe-Jones
Hubert Cunliffe-Jones (30 March 1905 – 3 January 1991) was an Australian-born Congregational Church minister and author, who became chairman of the Congregational Union of England and Wales and a professor at the University of Manchester. He was an Honorary Doctor of Divinity from the University of Edinburgh. Early life Cunliffe-Jones was born in Strathfield, New South Wales, the son of the Reverend Walter and Maud Cunliffe-Jones. His father was minister of the Strathfield-Homebush Congregational church (now Uniting Church – Korean Parish).
