Holman Prize
The LightHouse for the Blind and Visually Impaired is a San Francisco-based nonprofit organization, and is the oldest and largest of its kind in Northern California. History Founded in 1902 under the direction of Josephine Rowan as the Reading Room for the Blind in the San Francisco Public Library's basement, the LightHouse for the Blind and Visually Impaired has grown out of a series of nonprofit mergers throughout its century-long existence into an organization that provides a wide range of services for the visually challenged in the Bay Area. In 1914, the organization became the San Francisco Association for the Blind and offered occupational classes in addition to employment opportunities to the blind in the production of brooms, baskets, and furniture. This manufacturing process was known as "Blindcraft" but has been discontinued since 1982. Rose Resnick
Rose Resnick (November 27, 1906 – August 14, 2006) was an American musician, educator, and philanthropist. She was co-founder and co-director of the Enchanted Hills Camp for the Blind in California, and a leader in San Francisco's blind community for decades. Early life and education Rose Resnick was born in New York City, the daughter of Harris Resnick and Leah Resnick. Both of her parents were Jewish immigrants from Russia; her father sold cloaks and suits. She became blind from glaucoma in childhood. She studied music at the Manhattan School of Music and at the Fontainebleau Conservatory of Music in France, with Nadia Boulanger. She graduated from Hunter College in 1928. She later earned a master's degree and a teaching credential at San Francisco State University in 1961, with a master's thesis titled "Learning and Social Development at a Camp for Blind Children." James Holman
James Holman Royal Society, FRS (15 October 1786 – 29 July 1857), known as the "Blind Traveller," was a British adventurer, author and social observer, best known for his writings on his extensive travels. Completely blind and experiencing pain and limited mobility, he undertook a series of solo journeys that were unprecedented both in their extent of geography and method of "human echolocation". In 1866, the journalist William Jerdan wrote that "From Marco Polo to Mungo Park (explorer), Mungo Park, no three of the most famous travellers, grouped together, would exceed the extent and variety of countries traversed by our blind countryman." Penny Melville-Brown
Penny Melville-Brown is a British Royal Navy veteran, blind baker and winner of the Holman Prize. She served for 22 years in the Women's Royal Naval Service (WRNS) and Royal Navy, reaching the rank of commander. She was the first woman to hold the position of naval barrister.
