Hockhocking-Adena Bike Path
The Hockhocking Adena Bikeway, known colloquially as The Bike Path or more formally (but unofficially) as The Athens County Bike Path, is a long bicycle path in Athens County, Ohio, Athens County, Ohio, in the United States. The original section of the path was built on a levee along the Hocking River at Ohio University in Athens, Ohio, Athens, on university land. It was gradually expanded and now crosses university land, city land, and county land. The greater part of the path is a rail trail, (a bicycle path built on an abandoned railroad grade). The eastern terminus is at the western intersection of South Canaan Road and U.S. Route 50, US-50. Hocking College
Hocking College is a public community college in Nelsonville, Ohio. The college offers more than 60 associate and vocational programs and is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission. The college was chartered in 1969 by the Ohio Board of Regents. Hocking has 3,474 students enrolled (78% of students are full-time). Its 2,300-acre campus is set in a rural setting and uses a semester-based academic calendar. Hocking's athletic teams are the Hawks. B&O Railroad
The Baltimore and Ohio Railroad was the oldest railroad in the United States and the first steam-operated common carrier. Construction of the line began in 1828, and it operated as B&O from 1830 until 1987, when it was merged into the Chessie System. Its lines are today controlled by CSX Transportation. Founded to serve merchants from Baltimore who wanted to do business with settlers crossing the Appalachian Mountains, the railroad competed with several existing and proposed turnpikes and canals, including the Erie and Chesapeake and Ohio Canal. The railroad began operation in 1830 on a 13-mile line between Baltimore and Elliot's Mill in Maryland. Horse-drawn cars were replaced by steam locomotives the following year. Athens Conservancy
The Athens Conservancy is a 501 (c) (3) land trust based in Athens County, Ohio. It was founded in 2002. It is an all-volunteer organization. Preserves The Conservancy owns and manages 14 nature preserves in Athens County: *Blair Preserve, adjacent to Strouds Run State Park. This preserve, in Canaan Township, was purchased in two sections using Clean Ohio Conservation Fund moneys. The name commemorates Brian Blair, who provided financial backing for the property. *Bluebell Preserve, adjacent to the Hockhocking-Adena Bikeway, and bordering the Wayne National Forest to the west. This preserve was created in two phases, 65 acres donated to the Conservancy by AEP in 2006, and 165 acres purchased from AEP using Clean Ohio Conservation Fund moneys in 2018. Wayne National Forest
The Wayne National Forest is located in the Appalachian part of the US state of Ohio, in the Unglaciated Allegheny Plateau. It is the first and only national forest in Ohio. Forest headquarters are located between The Plains and Nelsonville, Ohio, on US Route 33 overlooking the Hocking River. Moonville Rail-Trail
King Switch Tunnel The Moonville Rail-Trail is a ten-mile (16 kilometer) rail-trail in southeast Ohio, located in Vinton and Athens Counties. It is largely embedded in the Zaleski State Forest and passes close to Lake Hope State Park. The trail is named after the Moonville Tunnel through which it passes. The trail is built on the grade of a railroad originally built as part of the Marietta and Cincinnati Railroad, which ran between its namesake cities. The M&C was acquired by the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad becoming its Southwestern Division. The B&O was merged into the Chessie System Railroads, which was then merged into CSX Transportation. Athens-Belpre Rail-Trail
The Athens-Belpre Rail-Trail is a new trailway now being developed in southeast Ohio. It will link Athens, Ohio, in Athens County, with Belpre, Ohio, in Washington County. It will link on the west with the Hockhocking Adena Bikeway. There are hopes of eventually connecting with the North Bend Rail Trail in West Virginia. It will largely use the former B&O Railroad line from Belpre to Athens, which began as the B&O Short Line, and which became part of the B&O main line to St. Louis, Missouri. Nelsonville is a city in northwestern Athens County, Ohio, United States, located about southeast of Columbus. The population was 5,373 at the 2020 census.
