Hmu
The Hmu language (''hveb Hmub''), also known as Qiandong Miao (黔东, Eastern Guizhou Miao), Central Miao (中部苗语), East Hmongic (Ratliff 2010), or (somewhat ambiguously) Black Miao, is a dialect cluster of Hmongic languages of China. The best studied dialect is that of Yǎnghāo (养蒿) village, Taijiang County, Guizhou Province. Qanu (咯努), a Hmu variety, had 11,450 speakers as of 2000, and is spoken just south of Kaili City, Guizhou. The Qanu are ethnoculturally distinct from the other Hmu. Names Autonyms include ' in Kaili, ' in Jinping County, ' in Tianzhu County, ' in Huangping County, ' in some parts of Qiandongnan (''Miaoyu Jianzhi 苗语简志'' 1985), and ' in Rongshui Miao Autonomous County, Guangxi. Hmongic Languages
The Hmongic languages, also known as Miao languages ( zh, s=苗语, p=Miáoyǔ), include the various languages spoken by the Miao people (such as Hmong, Hmu, and Xong). Sanqiao Language
Sanqiao () is a Hmongic language, Hmongic language spoken in Jinping County, Guizhou, Jinping County and Liping County, Guizhou, China by about 6,000 people. The Sanqiao people sing traditional songs using the Suantang language (), a Sinitic language that is similar to New Xiang. Classification A study by Hsiu (2024) found that Sanqiao is an Hmu language, East Hmongic (Central Miao) language, belonging to the East Qiandong dialectal group. Miao People
Miao is a word that the Chinese use to designate some ethnic minority groups living in southern China and Mainland Southeast Asia. Miao is thus officially recognized by the Chinese government as one of the largest ethnic minority groups that has more than 56 official ethnicities and dialects. The Miao live primarily in the mountains of southern China. Their homeland encompasses the provinces of Guizhou, Yunnan, Sichuan, Hubei, Hunan, Guangxi, Guangdong, and Hainan. Some sub-groups of the Miao, most notably the Hmong people, have migrated out of China into Southeast Asia (Myanmar, Northern Vietnam, Laos, and Thailand). Mieu People
The Mieu people (aka Na Mieu, Na Mieo) live in the mountains of northern Vietnam. They are considered by the government of Vietnam to be a subgroup of the Hmong people and therefore not one of the 54 recognized ethnicities in Vietnam. However, the Mieu reject this and see themselves as a distinct ethnicity. Origin and 'Loss of Country' According to Mieu folk songs (tu siv) the Mieu people descended from immigrants from southern China. They are said to have had their own kingdom in Liuzhou, near Guilin in Guangxi. They rose up in arms to the invasion, oppression, and exploitation they faced from the Manchus and Han Chinese. Kaili City
Kaili (, Hmu language, Hmu: ) is a county-level city and the prefecture seat of Qiandongnan Miao and Dong Autonomous Prefecture, in southeastern Guizhou province, China. Shibing County
Shibing County (; Hmu: ''Qib Jux'') is a county in the east of Guizhou province, China. It is under the administration of the Qiandongnan Miao and Dong Autonomous Prefecture. Shibing's history goes back to at least 1391, when it was an important crossing halfway on the road between Zhenyuan and Huangping. The name Shibing is based on Miao language words for the stop in the middle. Shibing was established as a county in 1444. Between 1958 and 1962 it was part of Huangping County. Ná-Meo (Vietnamese: ''Na Miểu''; autonym: 'Hsiu (2015)) is a language of northern Vietnam, spoken by the Mieu people. Nguyen (2007) believes Na Meo may be a Hmongic language closest to Qiandong Miao.
