René-Robert Cavelier, Sieur De La Salle
René-Robert Cavelier, Sieur de La Salle (; November 22, 1643 – March 19, 1687), was a 17th-century French explorer and North American fur trade, fur trader in North America. He explored the Great Lakes region of the United States and Canada, and the Mississippi River. He is best known for an early 1682 expedition in which he canoed the lower Mississippi River from the mouth of the Illinois River to the Gulf of Mexico; there, on April 9, 1682, he claimed the Mississippi River basin for France after giving it the name Louisiana (New France), ''La Louisiane'', in honor of Louis IX of France, Saint Louis and Louis XIV. One source states that "he acquired for France the most fertile half of the North American continent". A presidio (''jail, fortification'') was a fortified base established by the Spanish Empire mainly between the 16th and 18th centuries in areas under their control or influence. The term is derived from the Latin word ''praesidium'' meaning ''protection'' or ''defense''. East Texas is a broadly defined cultural, geographic, and ecological region in the eastern part of the U.S. state of Texas that consists of approximately 38 counties. It is roughly divided into Northeast Texas, Northeast, Southeast Texas, Southeast, and Deep East Texas. Most of the region consists of the Piney Woods ecoregion. The Spanish Missions in Texas comprise the many Catholic outposts established in New Spain by Dominican, Jesuit, and Franciscan orders to spread their doctrine among Native Americans and to give Spain a toehold in the frontier land. Inez ( ) is a census-designated place (CDP), on Interstate 69/ U.S. Highway 59, fifteen miles northeast of Victoria, near the Jackson County, Texas line in Victoria County, Texas, United States.
