History Of FC Basel
Fussball Club Basel 1893 has a long and illustrious history, that spans the period from 1893 to the present day. Having competed at the highest level of football in Switzerland for most of this time, FCB currently play in the Swiss Super League. The club was founded on 15 November 1893. At first the club played their home games in the Landhof stadium. During the mid- 1960s Basel they played their games in St. Jakob Stadium which was demolished in 1998. During the construction of the new stadium, between 1998 and 2001, the Stadion Schützenmatte was the clubs temporary home ground. Since 2001 Basel play home games at St. Jakob-Park, which is currently the largest club stadium in Switzerland. FC Basel
Fussball Club Basel 1893, widely known as FC Basel, FCB, or just Basel, is a Swiss football club based in Basel, in the Canton of Basel-Stadt. Formed in 1893, the club has been Swiss national champions 20 times, Swiss Cup winners 13 times, and Swiss League Cup winners once. Basel have competed in European competitions every season since 1999–2000. They have qualified for the Group stages of the Champions League more times than any other Swiss club – a total of seven times – and are the only Swiss club to have ever qualified to the Group stages directly. In 2021 they set the new record for a Swiss team with the most successful international group stage campaign by reaching 14 points in their Conference League group. Helmut Benthaus
Helmut Benthaus (born 5 June 1935) is a German former football player and coach. He spent his best playing days at Westfalia Herne and his best coaching days at FC Basel. Early career Born in Herne, Benthaus played youth football and started his professional career at Westfalia Herne in 1958. In 1959 he won the Oberliga West title but left just a year later to join 1860 Munich before moving to 1. FC Köln. He won the Oberliga West again in 1963 with Köln, then the German Bundesliga in 1964 and was Bundesliga runner-up in 1965. He played for the West Germany national team on eight occasions between 1958 and 1960. Player-manager for Basel To the beginning of the 1965–66 season Benthaus transferred from Köln to FC Basel and was appointed as player-coach. Fritz Schäublin
Fritz Schäublin (1 February 1867 – 1951) was the rector of the humanistic grammar school in Basel. He was founder member of FC Basel and played football with them as striker or as midfielder. With his excellent skills he served the club in various offices for many years. He was founder of their tennis department. Football career Schäublin was member of the Basel rowing club and he had visited England and there he had seen the new football game. After a newspaper advert, there was a meeting on 15 November 1893 and the Fussball Club Basel was founded. Schäublin was participant of this founders meeting and he joined the team that evening. Ferdinand Isler
Ferdinand Isler (26 December 1866 – 14 December 1951) was a professor at the canton school in Frauenfeld. He was founder member of FC Basel and became the team’s first captain. He later became actuary of the club. He was a great propagandist. He wrote brochures about the football game and translated the English rules of the game into German. He was one of the first sports journalists. Football career Isler studied philosophy at the University of Zurich, graduation with certificate on 22 July 1885. He then moved to Basel, was member of the Basel rowing club and during a visit to England he had seen the new football game. Jean Grieder (28 March 1874 – 1941) was a Swiss businessman, an asset and liability manager. He held high honorary positions in his hometown and was founder member of FC Basel. Football career Grieder was member of the Basel rowing club and during a visit to England he had seen the new football game. After a newspaper advert, there was a meeting on 15 November 1893 and the Fussball Club Basel was founded. Grieder attended the founders meeting and joined the team that evening. Wilhelm Glaser (6 December 1874 – 31 May 1946) was a Swiss footballer who played for FC Basel in the 1890s. He played as forward or as defender. Football career Glaser was member of the Basel rowing club and during a visit to England he had seen the new football game. After a newspaper advert, there was a meeting on 15 November 1893 and the Fussball Club Basel was founded. Glaser attended the founders meeting and joined the team that evening. Glaser immediately started training with the team and the first football match that the club held was on 10 December against the football team of the club RTV/Realschüler-Turnverein, a secondary school student gymnastics club. Glaser played in the match and he was the club's very first goal scorer and at the end of the match they won by two goals to nil. Roland Geldner
Carl Maria 'Roland' Geldner (23 May 1870 – 1905) was a Swiss businessman and founder member of FC Basel. He was the club's first chairman. He was a well-known personality in the city and long-time player with the first team from the early days of football. He was a distinguished person and was the soul of the club in the early years. Football career Geldner was member of the Basel rowing club and during a visit to England with his younger brothers, Max Geldner and Georges Geldner, had seen the new football game. The brothers placed an advertisement in the 12 November 1893 edition of the Basler national newspaper, requesting that a football team be formed and that anyone who wished to join should meet up the following Wednesday at 8:15 in the restaurant Schuhmachern-Zunft. Max Geldner (25 March 1875 - 17 July 1958) was a Swiss footballer who played for FC Basel. He played as striker or as midfielder. He was a well-known personality in the cities business world. Football career During a visit to England together with his brother, Roland Geldner, they had seen the new football game. His elder brother placed an advert in the local newspaper to arrange a meeting about founding the Football Club Basel. Max Geldner attended the founders meeting and joined the team that evening. His brother was appointed as the club's first president. Josy Ebinger
Josy Ebinger (26 March 1880 – 18 September 1955) was a Swiss-French businessman and founder member of FC Basel. He was long-time player in their first team and played as defender and midfielder. He was active as a club official in various offices and was club chairman from October 1902 to May 1903. He was vice president of the Swiss Football Association in 1900. As businessman he was a well-known personality in the city and held high honorary positions in his hometown. Biography Ebinger was member of the Basel rowing club and during a visit to England had seen the new football game.
