Historical Society Of Western Pennsylvania
The Historical Society of Western Pennsylvania (HSWP) is a cultural organization in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. History After several attempts during the early and mid-century to establish a historical society, an organization called Old Residents of Pittsburgh and Western Pennsylvania was formed on January 10, 1859. Five years later the group changed its name to Historical Society of Western Pennsylvania. In 1911, society members oversaw the planning and implementation of special events held in conjunction with the centennial of the start of steam navigation services on western rivers. On February, 17, 1914, the Historical Society of Western Pennsylvania opened its new building on Grant Boulevard near Parkman in Pittsburgh's Schenley district. Pennsylvania Humanities Council
Pennsylvania Humanities Council (PHC) is a non-profit affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It is one of 56 state humanities councils founded in the wake of the National Foundation on the Arts and Humanities Act of 1965. The Executive Director is Laurie Zierer. History The earliest state councils were organized in 1971, when Pennsylvania’s council was founded with a start-up grant from the University of Pennsylvania. In 1980, the name Pennsylvania Humanities Council (PHC) was adopted and the organization settled in Philadelphia. In the early years, PHC's activity consisted almost exclusively of issuing grants to non-profit organizations with funds provided by NEH. Meadowcroft Rockshelter
The Meadowcroft Rockshelter is an archaeological site which is located near Avella in Jefferson Township, Pennsylvania. The site is a rock shelter in a bluff overlooking Cross Creek (a tributary of the Ohio River), and contains evidence that the area may have been continually inhabited for more than 19,000 years. If accurately dated, it would be one of the earliest known sites with evidence of a human presence and continuous human occupation in the New World. The site is located twenty-seven miles west-southwest of Pittsburgh in the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. Allegheny Regional Asset District
The Allegheny Regional Asset District (RAD) is a special purpose unit of local government in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. Its physical boundaries are the same as those of Allegheny County, and include the City of Pittsburgh. History The district was authorized by an act of the Pennsylvania Legislature (Act 77) on December 22, 1993. It provides grants from half of the proceeds of the 1% Allegheny County Sales and Use Tax. The County levied the tax in March 1994 and every municipal government in Allegheny County voted to participate in its benefits. 25% of the funds go directly to the County and 25% goes to the other municipal governments based on a formula weighted to help distressed communities. The proceeds are used to help shift the tax burden away from property taxes and for municipal functions such as road repair and police protection.
