Hiram W. Woodward
Hiram W. Woodward, Jr. is an American art historian who specialises in pre-modern Southeast Asian art. After completing a Bachelor of Arts, B.A. in fine arts at Harvard College in 1962, Woodward joined the Peace Corps and taught English at Silpakorn University in Bangkok, Thailand. After three years, he returned to the United States in 1966 where he took an Master of Arts, M.A. in Southeast Asian Studies at Yale University. From 1969 to 1972 he lived in Thailand again and traveled extensively through Southeast Asia. With a thesis on ''the Art of Central Siam, 950–1350 A.D.'' he completed his Ph.D., also at Yale, in 1975. From 1972 until 1982, Woodward taught as assistant professor of History of Art at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor and subsequently until 1986 as associate professor at the University of Vermont. Southeast Asian Art
The art produced in Southeast Asia includes the art from eleven countries that form Southeast Asia. The cultural development of the area was historically dominated by India, Indian influence, though several cohesive traits exist before Indian influence. The art is inspired by many countries. Inspiration Art culture in Southeast Asia is usually inherited from the art produced in China of East Asia and India of South Asia. Some of the art culture was changed after being invaded by other colonies, such as Dutch East Indies in Indonesia. Countries Brunei Art in Brunei was not a focus until the early 1950s, Brunei's government then took a stand to support culture. They created a building for artists to sell their works. National Museum Of Asian Art
The National Museum of Asian Art consists of the Smithsonian Institution’s two Asian art galleries, the Freer Gallery of Art and the Arthur M. Sackler Gallery, which are situated in connecting buildings on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. The galleries are operated by the same board of trustees and share a budget. Both institutions are run by the same management, curatorial and other staff. The two galleries feature 45,000 works of Asian art. History The Freer Gallery of Art opened in 1923 to display the nineteenth century American painting and Asian art collection of American industrialist Charles Lang Freer. Freer provided an initial endowment used to construct the gallery building. The Arthur M. Sackler Gallery was built next door to the Freer in 1987, after Arthur M.
