Hiram Dow
Hiram Millet Dow (April 21, 1885 – March 7, 1969) was an American attorney and politician who served as the 10th lieutenant governor of New Mexico from January 1, 1937 to January 1, 1939. Early life and education Down was born in Cotulla, Texas and raised in Seven Rivers, New Mexico. After graduating from the New Mexico Military Institute in 1905, he earned a Bachelor of Laws from the Washington and Lee University School of Law in 1908. Career After graduating from law school, Dow later settled in Roswell, New Mexico, working as a lawyer and serving as the city's mayor. He was also the president of the New Mexico Bar Association and New Mexico Board of Bar Commissioners. Dow was elected lieutenant governor of New Mexico in 1936 and assumed office in 1936. Cotulla, Texas
Cotulla ( ) is a city in and the county seat of La Salle County, Texas, United States. Its population was 3,718 as of the 2020 census. History Immigrant Joseph Cotulla, who was reared in Silesia, then a part of Prussia, migrated to the United States in the 1850s. He joined the Union Army in Brownsville, Texas. He lived in Atascosa County, but arrived in La Salle County in 1868 to establish what became a large ranching operation. After learning that the International-Great Northern Railroad intended to lay tracks in La Salle County, he worked to establish the town that bears his name. In 1881, Cotulla donated 120 acres of his land to the railroad, and in 1882, a depot was constructed there. In 1883, the town was granted a post office. The same year, Cotulla became the county seat by special election. The State Bar of New Mexico (SBNM) is the integrated (mandatory) bar association of the U.S. state of New Mexico. History The State Bar of New Mexico first met on January 19, 1886 in Santa Fe, New Mexico as a voluntary professional organization. There were 29 original members, and William A. Vincent was the first president. In 1925, state statute caused the State Bar to operate as an agency of the New Mexico Supreme Court. In 1978, the State Bar of New Mexico (State Bar) was incorporated under the laws of the State of New Mexico. Structure The SBNM is governed by a Board of Bar Commissioners, consisting of 19 members elected by district and one from each of the Senior Lawyer, Young Lawyer, and Paralegal Divisions. Seven Rivers, New Mexico
Seven Rivers, New Mexico was formerly a ghost town, located between Carlsbad and Artesia, New Mexico. The town itself was first settled in the mid-1860s, and for a time thrived as a trading post. Its name derives from seven creeks that flowed through it, into the Pecos River. The Seven Rivers Warriors, a gang that operated on the Murphy-Dolan side of the Lincoln County War, used the town as its refuge. Both the Jessie Evans Gang and the John Kinney Gang also frequented the town during that time. The town grown in the 1880s with the addition of a schoolhouse, hotel, post office and saloons.
