Hiraga Gennai
was a Japanese polymath and ''rōnin'' of the Edo period. He was a pharmacologist, student of ''Rangaku'', author, painter and inventor well known for his '' Erekiteru'' (electrostatic generator), ''Kandankei'' (thermometer) and ''Kakanpu'' (asbestos cloth). Gennai composed several works of literature, including the fictional satires ''Fūryū Shidōken den'' (1763), the ''Nenashigusa'' (1763), and the ''Nenashigusa kohen'' (1768), and the satirical essays ''On Farting'' and ''A Lousy Journey of Love''. He also authored two guidebooks on the male prostitutes of Japan, the ''Kiku no en'' (1764) and the ''San no asa'' (1768). was a retainer to the Takeda family towards the beginning of Japan's Sengoku period (1467–1615). He was attacked by Takeda Nobutora at Un no Kuchi in 1536, and forced Nobutora to retreat. But Nobutora's son, Takeda Shingen was daimyō, daimyo of Kai Province during the Sengoku period of Japan. Known as "the Tiger of Kai", he was one of the most powerful daimyo of the late Sengoku period, and credited with exceptional military prestige. Vice Admiral Baron was a career naval officer in the Imperial Japanese Navy, Doctor of Engineering and head of the engineering school of Tokyo Imperial University and a leading Japanese naval architect in the 1910s and 1920s, responsible for designing a number of famous warships, many of which would later see action during World War II. He participated in establishing the Chiba Institute of Technology from 1941.
