Hip Hope Hits
''Hip Hope Hits'' is an annual collection of Christian rap songs. The series is produced by tobyMac's Gotee Records. It began as a one off collection titled ''We Are Hip Hope''. In late 2004, the first of the albums in the current format, ''Hip Hope Hits 2005'' was released. It featured many more artists and tracks as well as an enhanced disc featuring a documentary about DJ Maj, a prominent Christian hip hop producer, having produced many tracks on the album. A DVD of music videos was also released alongside ''Hip Hope Hits 2005'', featuring some of the same tracks and some differing tracks, and also the same documentary. Since then, an album and DVD have been released annually with the latest, ''Hip Hope Hits 2009'', being released on February 3, 2009. The compilations continue to feature more and more tracks or remixes exclusive to ''Hip Hope'' and not taken from an artist's own album. Christian Hip Hop
Christian hip-hop (originally gospel rap, also known as Christian rap, gospel hip-hop or holy hip-hop) is a cross-genre of contemporary Christian music and hip-hop. It emerged from urban contemporary music and Christian media in the United States during the 1980s. Christian hip-hop music first emerged on record in 1982 with a track entitled "Jesus Christ (The Gospel Beat)" by Queens, New York artist McSweet. The first full-length Christian hip-hop album, ''Bible Break'', by Oklahoma artist Stephen Wiley, was released in 1985, with the title track becoming a hit on Christian radio in 1986. Other early Christian hip recording artists from the mid-1980s included P.I.D. (Preachas in Disguise), who recorded to funky rock rhythms, as well as JC & the Boys and Michael Peace. TobyMac
Kevin Michael McKeehan (born October 22, 1964), better known by his stage name TobyMac (styled tobyMac), is an American rapper, singer, songwriter, and record producer. His road band is known as Diverse City. Widely regarded as one of the most influential Christian artists of all time, he was as a member of the Christian hip-hop, Christian rap-Christian rock, rock trio DC Talk, staying with them from 1987 until they went on hiatus in 2000. Gotee Records is a record label of Christian hip-hop, based in Franklin, Tennessee in the United States. History The label was founded in 1994 by TobyMac, Todd Collins and Joey Elwood. The first album produced is Out of Eden's '' Lovin' the Day''. The label was a part of EMI Christian Music Group. However, they bought back EMI's minority share to become fully independent again as of March 31, 2008. Toby McKeehan is currently the president of the company and as of 2009, the label is currently distributed by Warner Bros. Records. McKeehan got the name "Gotee" from the song "Socially Acceptable" on dc Talk's album '' Free at Last''. A member of the band GRITS was doing the background vocals, and he was saying, "Let it go, T, let it go." ("T" refers to Toby). McKeehan happened to be growing a goatee on his face at the time, and when Mark Heimermann pointed out the coincidence, he decided to name his new record company, "Gotee Records". Michael Joseph "Mike" Allen (born October 9, 1970), professionally known as DJ Maj, is an American Christian music DJ and rapper, contributing to gospel music albums released by tobyMac, GRITS, Ill Harmonics, Carman, dc Talk, and the Newsboys. DJ Maj has released several mixtapes, as well as three solo albums: ''BoogiRoot'', ''Speckled Goats'' and ''Speckled Goats II''. Career His friends gave him the name "DJ Magic" after watching him play on turntables. Mike only learned to deejay because his friend who was a DJ moved away from Louisiana so he felt he had to learn it all for himself. He later changed his name to "DJ Maj" to reflect that, as a Christian, he did not want to be associated with magic. A Dove Award is an accolade by the Gospel Music Association (GMA) of the United States to recognize outstanding achievement in the Christian music industry. The awards ceremonies presented annually and have been held in Nashville, Tennessee except in 2011 and 2012 when they were held in Atlanta, Georgia. The ceremonies feature live musical performances and are broadcast on TBN. The awards were established in 1969 and represent a variety of musical styles including rock, pop, hip hop, country, and urban. The 41st Annual GMA Dove Awards presentation was held on April 21, 2010 recognizing accomplishments of musicians for the year 2009. The show was held at The Opry Entertainment Complex in Nashville, Tennessee, and was hosted by Bart Millard. Nominations were announced on February 18, 2010 during a press conference at Belmont University's Curb Café in Nashville, Tennessee.
