Hilsea Lido
Hilsea Lido is a freshwater Lido (swimming pool), lido at Hilsea, Portsmouth, England, which opened in 1935. Portsmouth City Council is currently renovating Hilsea Lido as part of the Hilsea Lines project in the north of the city. The aim of this project is to improve the area and encourage residents and visitors to use it. The project has been enabled by funding from the UK government. Description The Hilsea Lido is a leisure facility featuring the Main Pool (measuring 67m x 18m – 4.6m deep). At 4.6 metres (15 feet) deep, the lido has the distinction of being the deepest outdoor pool in the UK apart from Broomhill Pool which is the same depth. A large Splash Pool (45m x 18m x 6ins deep) designed for younger swimmers used to be adjacent to the Main Pool. This has now been replaced by the Hilsea Jubilee Splash Pool. In British English, a lido ( , ) is a public outdoor swimming pool and surrounding facilities, or part of a beach where people can swim, Sunbathing, lie in the sun, or participate in water sports. On a cruise ship or ocean liner, the lido deck (ship), deck features outdoor pools and related facilities. The term probably made its way into English via "Lansbury's Lido", a nickname used in the British press for London's Serpentine bathing place. The bathing place was revamped in 1930 as a project of the Labour Party (UK), Labour First Commissioner for Works, George Lansbury, a plaque to whom appears on the Serpentine (lake), Serpentine pavilion to this day. Hilsea Lido Splash Pool
Hilsea is a district of the city of Portsmouth in the English county of Hampshire. Hilsea is home to one of Portsmouth's main sports and leisure facilities – the Mountbatten centre. Trafalgar School (formerly the City of Portsmouth Boys' School) is also in Hilsea. It is also the home of Portsmouth rugby football club Located at the Northern end of Portsea Island, for most of its history, Hilsea was a small hamlet on the Portsmouth to London road. The name "Hilsea" probably means 'holly island'. The boundaries of Portsmouth were not extended to encompass the hamlet until 1832. The last working farm in Portsmouth, Green Farm, was located in the area up to the 1990s. This area is now a residential estate and is marked by a pub and hotel, still known locally as the Green Farm, although its external sign bears only the name of the Toby Carvery chain which now owns it. In England a Certificate of Immunity from Listing, generally known as a Certificate of Immunity (COI), is a document which guarantees that a building will not be statutorily listed (added to the National Heritage List for England (NHLE)) or be served with a Building Preservation Notice (BPN) by the local planning authority for the succeeding five years. Such a certificate may be sought by developers of a building or site in order to establish certainty that the project is viable. The certificate is defined by Section 6 of the Planning (Listed Buildings and Conservation Areas) Act 1990. ''Splash!'' is a British reality television series that follows celebrities learning diving. The celebrities performed each week in front of a panel of judges and a live audience in an Olympic-size diving pool with the result each week partly determined by public vote. Gabby Logan and Vernon Kay presented the show, whilst Team GB Olympic gold medal-winning diver Tom Daley was the expert mentor to the celebrities. It was filmed at the Inspire: Luton Sports Village, which is based in Stopsley, Luton.
