Hillsborough is a List of suburbs in Greater Newcastle, New South Wales, suburb of the City of Lake Macquarie, New South Wales, Australia from Newcastle, New South Wales, Newcastle's central business district on the eastern side of Lake Macquarie (New South Wales), Lake Macquarie. It is part of the City of Lake Macquarie north ward. History The Aboriginal people, in this area, the Awabakal, were the first people of this land. In 1874 a coal mining venture was started at Hillsborough, but the coal was found to be of inferior quality and could not be sold. The mine was abandoned in 1879 and the town shortly afterwards. Hillsborough remained a ghost town until it was redeveloped after World War II. Hillsborough Public School opened in 1963. The town of Hillsborough is the county seat of Orange County, North Carolina, United States, and is located along the Eno River. The population was 6,087 in 2010, but it grew rapidly to 9,660 by 2020. Its name was unofficially shortened to "Hillsboro" during the 19th century. Hillsborough Township is a township in Somerset County, in the U.S. state of New Jersey. Located in the Raritan Valley region, the township is a suburban and exurban bedroom community of New York City within the New York Metropolitan Area. As of the 2020 United States census, the township's population was 43,276, an increase of 4,973 (+13.0%) from the 2010 census count of 38,303, which in turn reflected an increase of 1,669 (+4.6%) from the 36,634 counted in the 2000 census. Hillsborough (frequently spelled Hillsboro) is a census-designated place (CDP) and the main village in the town of Hillsborough in Hillsborough County, New Hampshire, United States. The population of the CDP was 2,156 at the 2020 census, out of 5,939 in the entire town. Geography The CDP is in the southeastern part of the town of Hillsborough, along the Contoocook River. The southern border of the CDP follows the town line with Deering. Parts of the eastern and southern borders follow the Contoocook River. The northern border is the Route 202/ 9 bypass, and the western border follows Route 202 and a power line in the valley of the North Branch of the Contoocook.
