Hildegard Brom-Fischer
Hildegard Brom-Fischer (1908-2001) was a Dutch textile artist, specializing in ecclesiastical embroidery. Biography Brom-Fischer was born on 16 July 1908 in Coesfeld, Germany. She studied at the training center for applied arts ''Werkkunstschule'' in Münster, Germany. She studied with Joos Jaspert. By 1937 she had located to the Netherlands, living in Amsterdam, Oudenrijn, Utrecht, and Bunnik. Brom-Fischer was a member of Nederlandsche Vereeniging voor Ambachts- en Nijverheidskunst (V.A.N.K.) the Dutch Association for Craft and Craft Art. She was married to Jan Eloy Brom. Focusing on Christian themes, she created multiple pieces featuring Saints Cosmas and Damian. Brom-Fischer exhibited at the 1933 Milan Triennial and the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam. Brom-Fischer died on 22 April 2001 in Utrecht. The Museum Catharijneconvent (St. Catherine's Convent Museum) is a museum of religious art in Utrecht, Netherlands. It is located in the former St. Catharine convent, having been sited there since 1979. Its collections include many artifacts from the museum of religious art of the Catholic Archbishopric of Utrecht, located in the convent until 1979. In 2006 the convent closed for restoration. It is part of the Utrecht Museum Night. Collection The museum has an extensive collection of historical and art-historical objects from the early Middle Ages to the present. Saints Cosmas And Damian
Cosmas and Damian ( ar, قُزما ودميان, translit=Qozma wa Demyaan; grc-gre, Κοσμᾶς καὶ Δαμιανός, translit=Kosmás kai Damianós; la, Cosmas et Damianus; AD) were two Arab physicians in the town Cyrrhus, and were reputedly twin brothers, and early Christian martyrs. They practised their profession in the seaport of Aegeae, then in the Roman province of Syria. Cosmas and Damian were third century Arabian-born twin brothers who embraced Christianity and practised medicine and surgery without a fee. This led them to being named ''anargyroi'' (from the Greek , 'the silverless' or 'unmercenaries'); by this, they attracted many to the Christian faith. The Nederlandsche Vereeniging voor Ambachts- en Nijverheidskunst (V.A.N.K.) (Dutch Association for Craft and Industrial Art) was founded in 1904. It was founded by Jacob Pieter van den Bosch, Herman Hana, Klaas van Leeuwen, Theo Molkenboer, and Willem Penaat. At the turn of the century the idea of ''artist-craftsmen'' was emerging. The existing Dutch societies and clubs for painters and architects did not adequately represent these artisans and they formed V.A.N.K., the first society for designers in the Netherlands. V.A.N.K. aimed to elevate crafts and industrial design. Many founders were also interested in the changing focus of design to a new age of "truth, honesty, and realism" in the new century.
