High On Fire
High on Fire is an American heavy metal band from Oakland, California, that was formed in 1998. Matt Pike, the band's frontman and founder, also plays guitar for Sleep. High on Fire won the 2019 Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance with their song "Electric Messiah". The band has released nine studio albums, with their newest, '' Cometh the Storm'', released in 2024. History High on Fire was founded in the late summer of 1998 by Sleep guitarist Matt Pike, drummer Des Kensel, and bassist George Rice. Rice, who had previously played in Dear Deceased, originally auditioned to be the band's vocalist. In 1999, High on Fire recorded a three-song EP, which was released on 12th Records. Stoner Metal
Stoner rock, also known as stoner metal or stoner doom, is a rock music fusion genre that combines elements of doom metal with psychedelic rock and acid rock. The genre emerged during the early 1990s and was pioneered foremost by Kyuss and Sleep (band), Sleep. Characteristics Stoner rock is typically slow-to-mid tempo and features a heavily Distortion (music), distorted, Groove (music), groove-laden bass-heavy sound, melodic vocals, and "retro" production. Due to the similarities between stoner and sludge metal, there is often a crossover between the two genres. This hybrid has traits of both styles, but generally lacks stoner metal's laid back atmosphere and its usage of psychedelic music, psychedelia. Sleep (band)
Sleep is an American stoner/ doom metal band from San Jose, California. Guitarist Matt Pike and bassist and vocalist Al Cisneros have been the only constant members throughout the band's history. Critic Eduardo Rivadavia describes them as "perhaps the ultimate stoner rock band" and notes they exerted a strong influence on metal in the 1990s. The band released their debut album, '' Volume One'', in 1991, after which original fourth member Justin Marler left. Sleep gained wider attention with their second album, '' Sleep's Holy Mountain'', in 1992. However, conflict with the band's record company contributed to their breakup by the end of the decade. ''Cometh the Storm'' is the ninth studio album by American heavy metal band High on Fire, released on April 19, 2024, through MNRK Heavy. It marks their first album with Coady Willis of Big Business & The Melvins on drums since the departure of co-founder Des Kensel in July 2019. Zeke (band)
Zeke is an American hardcore punk band from Seattle, Washington (state), Washington, formed in 1992. They are known for their extremely fast, energetic guitar sound. Zeke mixes this with strong influences from hard rock, and occasionally blues rock, and are often compared to Motörhead. Zeke has released six full-length studio albums. Their first single, "West Seattle Acid Party", came out in 1992; after several album releases on independent record label, indie label Scooch Pooch Records, they signed with Epitaph Records, Epitaph in 1998. Goatwhore is an American extreme metal band formed in New Orleans, Louisiana in 1997. Biography Goatwhore was formed by guitarist/backing vocalist Sammy “Pierre” Duet, who was previously the lead guitarist for Louisiana sludge metal band Acid Bath. The band's origins can date back to 1991 with Sammy and drummer Zak Nolan. The band was at the time called "Killgore" with Duet on lead guitar and vocals and Zak Nolan on drums. Killgore would release a number of demos up until 1997 when they changed their name to Goatwhore, after Acid Bath dissolved due to the death of bassist Audie Pitre. Steven Frank Albini (; July 22, 1962 – May 7, 2024) was an American musician and audio engineer. He founded and fronted the influential post-hardcore and noise rock bands Big Black (1981–1987), Rapeman (1987–1989) and Shellac (band), Shellac (1992–2024), and engineered acclaimed albums such as Pixies (band), the Pixies' ''Surfer Rosa'' (1988), PJ Harvey's ''Rid of Me'', Nirvana (band), Nirvana's ''In Utero'' (both 1993) and Manic Street Preachers' ''Journal for Plague Lovers'' (2009). ''Blessed Black Wings'' is the third studio album by American heavy metal band High on Fire. It would be the only with Joe Preston on bass who would be replaced by Jeff Matz. The tracks "The Face of Oblivion" and "Cometh Down Hessian" are based on stories by horror fiction author H. P. Lovecraft, '' At the Mountains of Madness'' and '' The Hound'', respectively. Thrones is the solo project of American bassist Joe Preston. Biography Thrones began in 1994 with an untitled cassette on the Punk in My Vitamins? label. He soon released the "Reddleman" single. In 1996, Thrones signed to Communion Records to issue the full-length album ''Alraune''. Thrones then signed to Kill Rock Stars and released the single "The Suckling". ''Surrounded by Thieves'' is the second studio album by American heavy metal band High on Fire. It was the band's first album for Relapse Records and was produced by Billy Anderson and the band itself. "Hung, Drawn and Quartered" was utilized as the album's promotional track. It was featured on a 7" split with Mastodon's "March of the Fire Ants" and had a music video which aired on ''Uranium'' and MTV's ''Headbangers Ball''.
