The office of High Sheriff of Mid Glamorgan was established in 1974 as part of the creation of the county of Mid Glamorgan in Wales following the Local Government Act 1972, and, together with the High Sheriff of West Glamorgan and the High Sheriff of South Glamorgan, effectively replaced the office of the High Sheriff of Glamorgan. The office of High Sheriff of West Glamorgan was established in 1974 as part of the creation of the county of West Glamorgan in Wales following the Local Government Act 1972. Together with the High Sheriff of Mid Glamorgan and the High Sheriff of South Glamorgan, it replaced the office of the High Sheriff of Glamorgan. This page is a list of High Sheriffs of Glamorgan. Sheriffs of Glamorgan served under and were answerable to the independent Lords of Glamorgan until that lordship was merged into the crown. This is in contrast to sheriffs of the English shires who were from the earliest times officers of the crown. Sheriffs in the modern sense, appointed and answerable to the crown, were instituted in the county of Glamorgan in 1541. Tony Lewis
Anthony Robert Lewis CBE (born 6 July 1938) is a Welsh former cricketer, who captained England, became a journalist, went on to become the face of BBC Television cricket coverage between 1986 and 1998, and became president of the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC). Early life Tony Lewis was born in Swansea, the first of two children of Wilfrid Lewis and his wife Marjorie (''née'' Flower). The family moved to Neath after the Second World War. Following his service in the war as a major, Wilfrid managed an insurance office in Neath, and then joined the Civil Service. Tony Lewis attended the Gnoll School in Neath and Neath Grammar School for Boys, where he learned the violin exceptionally well and was selected to play first violin for the National Youth Orchestra of Wales, as well as playing cricket and rugby for the school. Clive Thomas (football)
Clive Thomas (born 27 June 1936) is a retired Welsh former football referee, who operated in the English Football League and for FIFA during his career. He came from Treorchy in the Rhondda Valley. Career Early career Thomas's original ambition was to be a professional footballer. He achieved a place on the ground staff at Norwich City, playing as an inside forward. However an ankle injury forced him to give up playing. He was then persuaded to take up refereeing at the age of sixteen. He made rapid progress, reaching the Welsh League and in 1964 became a Football League linesman. Two years later aged only thirty he became a Football League referee, one of the youngest referees of the time. Beverley Humphreys
Beverley Anne Humphreys, MBE (born November 1947), is a Welsh operatic and concert soprano and broadcaster. She has become known for her work with refugees and in 2022 was awarded the MBE for "services to Community Cohesion and Broadcasting". Humphreys comes from Pontypridd and began her singing career with Welsh National Opera. She has performed and toured in several one-woman shows, including ''Seven Women under One Hat'', ''A Tribute to Ivor Novello'', ''With Melody in Mind'' and ''Legendary Ladies – Judy Garland, Gertrude Lawrence and Marlene Dietrich''. In 1992 Humphreys became the first singer to lead rugby crowds at the National Stadium in Cardiff in the singing of the Welsh national anthem. In 2010 she was appointed High Sheriff of Mid Glamorgan. Barbara Rees Wilding, (born June 1950) is a British retired senior police officer. She served as Chief Constable of South Wales Police, the first woman to hold the post. Wilding began her career as a cadet in Jersey Police''Fair Cop: A Century of British Policewomen'', BBC, 2015 in 1967 and was appointed constable in 1970. The following year she transferred to the Metropolitan Police where she served as an operational detective at New Scotland Yard. Mid Glamorgan
Mid Glamorgan () is a preserved county of Wales. From 1974 until 1996 it was also an administrative county with a county council. Mid Glamorgan was formed in 1974 under the Local Government Act 1972. It consisted of part of the former administrative county of Glamorgan and the county borough of Merthyr Tydfil, along with the parishes of Penderyn and Vaynor from Brecknockshire and the urban districts of Bedwas and Machen, Rhymney and part of Bedwellty, from Monmouthshire.
