High-speed Rail In Italy
High-speed rail in Italy consists of two lines connecting most of the List of cities in Italy, country's major cities. The first line connects Turin to Salerno via Milan, Bologna, Florence, Rome and Naples, the second runs from Turin to Venice via Milan and Verona, and is under construction in parts. Trains are operated with a top speed of . Passenger service is provided by Trenitalia and, since April 2012, by Nuovo Trasporto Viaggiatori, NTV, the world's first private open-access operator of high-speed rail to compete with a state-owned monopoly. 25 million passengers traveled on the network in 2011. In 2015, ridership increased to 55 million for Trenitalia and 9.1 million for NTV, for a combined 64 million passengers. The Frecciarossa 1000 is a High-speed rail, high-speed train operated by Italian state railway operator Trenitalia and the private Spanish high-speed rail operator Iryo. It was co-developed as a joint venture between Italian rail manufacturer Hitachi Rail Italy (initially AnsaldoBreda) and multinational conglomerate Alstom (initially Bombardier Transportation). Both design and production work were divided between the two partner companies. Design work on the train began in 2008, with considerable design work performed by Michael Vernon Robinson, Mike Robinson and Gruppo Bertone, Bertone. It was heavily based on existing products, including Bombardier's Bombardier Zefiro, Zefiro and Hitachi Rail Italy, AnsaldoBreda's AnsaldoBreda V250, V250 trains. ''Frecciargento'' (; from , "silver arrow") is a high-speed train of the Italian national train operator, Trenitalia, as one of its '' Le Frecce'' brands (along with '' Frecciarossa'' and '' Frecciabianca''). History In 1997, a new category, "Eurostar", was introduced as the brand name of the high-speed trains run by Trenitalia in Italy. Since 2006, trains started to be operated and promoted under further sub-brands and less and less sold under the name "Eurostar".
