Hibernian F.C., Hibernian Football Club ("Hibs") is a football in Scotland, Scottish football club, based in the Leith area of Edinburgh. Hibernian were the first ever United Kingdom, British club to enter an UEFA competitions, official European footballing competition, doing so in the inaugural 1955–56 European Cup, 1955–56 season of the European Cup. They were also the first Scottish club to participate in the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup, Fairs Cup, an unofficial forerunner of the UEFA Cup and UEFA Europa League, Europa League competitions. Hibernian reached the semi-final stage in the European Cup (1955–56) and the Fairs Cup (1960–61). 1956 European Cup Final
The 1956 European Cup Final was the inaugural final in the pan-European football competition, the European Cup, now known as the UEFA Champions League. It was contested by Real Madrid of Spain and Reims from France, and played at the Parc des Princes in Paris on 13 June 1956 in front of 38,000 people. Real Madrid reached the final by beating Italian side Milan 5–4 on aggregate, whereas Reims beat Scottish club Hibernian 3–0 on aggregate. The match finished 4–3 to Real Madrid, who went on to record an unrivalled five consecutive European Cup titles. Stade de Reims () is a French professional football club based in Reims. The club was formed in 1910 and plays in Ligue 1, the top level of Football in France, having been promoted from Ligue 2 in 2018. Gabriel Hanot (6 November 1889 – 10 August 1968) was a French footballer and journalist (the editor of ''L'Équipe''). The European Cup – which became the UEFA Champions League – was the brainchild of Hanot, as was the Ballon d'Or, an award that honours the male player deemed to have performed the best over the previous year. Biography He made 12 appearances for the France national football team, with his debut coming on 8 March 1908 against Switzerland. He was also part of France's squad for the football tournament at the 1908 Summer Olympics, but he did not play in any matches. He made another 10 appearances for them up to World War I. After the war he played one more time for France, as captain against Belgium on 9 March 1919. Following an aviation accident he gave up football and became a journalist.
