Hezekiah Barnes
Major General Hezekiah Barnes (c. 1760–1813) was an American military officer of the United States Militia, tavern proprietor, and politician from Charlotte, Vermont. He was an early settler of Charlotte and became the city's Postmaster. He also served as an officer during the American War of Independence, alongside his father, Colonel Asa Barnes, and built the Stagecoach Inn (Shelburne, Vermont), Stagecoach Tavern. Early life Hezekiah Barnes was born in about 1760 in Wallingford, Connecticut, the son of Colonel Asa Barnes and Lois Yale, daughter of Abel Yale, members of the Yale (surname), Yale family. His father fought in the American Revolutionary War, being Colonel of a Berkshire County regiment. His mother was the great-granddaughter of Capt. Thomas Yale, co-founder of Wallingford, Connecticut. The ''Surrender of General Burgoyne'' is an oil painting by the American artist John Trumbull. The painting was completed in 1821 and hangs in the United States Capitol rotunda in Washington, D.C. The painting depicts the surrender of Kingdom of Great Britain, British Lieutenant General John Burgoyne at Saratoga, New York on October 17, 1777, ten days after the Battle of Bemis Heights, Second Battle of Saratoga. Included in the depiction are many leaders of the American Continental Army and Militia (United States), militia forces that took part in the battle as well as the Germans in the American Revolution, Hessian commander Friedrich Adolf Riedesel and two British Army officers: Burgoyne and General William Phillips (British Army officer), William Phillips.
