Gothic Rock
Gothic rock (also called goth rock or simply goth) is a style of rock music that emerged from post-punk in the United Kingdom in the late 1970s. The first post-punk bands which shifted toward dark music with gothic overtones include Siouxsie and the Banshees, Joy Division, Bauhaus (band), Bauhaus, and the Cure. The genre itself was defined as a separate movement from post-punk. Gothic rock stood out due to its darker sound, with the use of primarily minor or bass chords, reverb, dark arrangements, or dramatic and melancholic melodies, having inspirations in gothic literature allied with themes such as sadness, nihilism, dark romanticism, tragedy, melancholy and morbidity. These themes are often approached poetically. The sensibilities of the genre led the lyrics to represent the evil of the century and the romantic idealization of death and the supernatural imagination. Gothic rock then gave rise to a broader goth subculture that included clubs, Gothic fashion, fashion and publi ...

Darkwave
Dark wave, or darkwave, is a music genre that emerged from the new wave and post-punk movement of the late 1970s. Dark wave compositions are largely based on minor key tonality and introspective lyrics and have been perceived as being dark, romantic and bleak, with an undertone of sorrow. Common features include the use of chordophones such as electric and acoustic guitar, violin and piano, as well as electronic instruments such as synthesizer, sampler and drum machine. Like new wave, dark wave is not considered an "unified genre but rather an umbrella term" that encompasses a variety of musical styles, including cold wave,Schilz, Andrea: ''Flyer der Schwarzen Szene Deutschlands: Visualisierungen, Strukturen, Mentalitäten.''

The album reached number 13 in the UK Indie Chart and has been well critically acclaimed. BBC Music described as the album's sound as a “darker-hued cousin of The xx rather than some pastiche of The Cure or Sisters of Mercy", while Pitchfork described singer Rachel Davies as “Florence’s evil sister”. Wash The Sins Not Only The Face
''Wash the Sins Not Only the Face'' is the second studio album by British rock band Esben and the Witch released on 21 January 2013. A deluxe version of the album was also released, which features the LP and CD version of the album and a bonus 7". The lyrics seem to be a semi-concept album as it is meant to be a journey with each song representing different parts of that journey. The album was first announced in October along with promotional single " Deathwaltz", which was released because they felt this was a good bridge between their first album to their second. The album was received well by critics, NME said "Call it highbrow, call it highfalutin, but with ''Wash The Sins…'', Esben are carving hulking tablets of stone boasting that intellect is nothing to be scared of. No amount of splashing can scrub that out" giving it 7/10, and Clash said "...everything about this album is bigger than what has gone before and reveals an energised band with a real belief in what they’r ...
