Altenburger Land
Altenburger Land is a district in Thuringia, Germany. It is bounded by (from the west and clockwise) the district of Greiz (district), Greiz, the Burgenlandkreis (Saxony-Anhalt), and the districts Leipzig (district), Leipzig, Mittelsachsen and Zwickau (district), Zwickau in Saxony. The district is a member of the Central German Metropolitan Region. Geography Altenburger Land is the easternmost district of Thuringia. It is largely agricultural with three quarters of the total area being used for agriculture. In contrast, forests make up only around 10% of the area, especially in the south of the district there are only few forests. Greiz (district)
Greiz ( ) is a Kreis (district) in the east of Thuringia, Germany. Neighboring districts are (from the west clockwise) Saale-Holzland, Saale-Orla, district-free city Gera, the Burgenlandkreis in Saxony-Anhalt, Altenburger Land, and the two Saxon districts Zwickau and Vogtlandkreis. History Historically the area of the district was part of the ''Vogtland'', named after the title ''Vogt'' given to the local rulers in the 13th century. Only two lines of the ''Reuß'' family survived from that time, with one principality based in Greiz, and the other in Gera and Schleiz.
